Indeed,Alex only heard about Izzie having his biological children because he contacted Izzie to ask her to support Meredith at her hearing. Their reconnection and learning about his children led Alex to leave Seattle and Jo in the worst way possible, first by lying about his whereabouts, before sending three letters to explain what had happened to Meredith, Jo and Bailey, letting audiences know the last time they had seen Alex Karev had already passed.
Alex’s decision to leave without a word destroyed Jo for some time, as he had always supported her before and helped her with her rehab, proving how stable they were, only for Alex to disappear without a word and move to Kansas. Had Alex not moved with Izzie and their children,Jo would be having Alex’s children instead of Link’s inGrey’s Anatomy, as they were on the same page. Similarly, Meredith would have still had her person in Seattle, making it more difficult for her to leave inGrey’s Anatomyseason 19.
