Melissa McCarthy linking arms with Jason Statham in Spy

8Spy (2015)

Jason Statham as Rick Ford

Spywas a hilarious espionage crime comedy that saw Melissa McCarthy portray a 40-year-old, single, desk-bound CIA analyst who breaks out of her boring day-to-day existence to become an actual spy. With a story about retrieving a stolen portable nuclear device, writer-director Paul Feig got plenty of laughs out of this well-worn concept andshowcased Jason Statham’s seldom-appreciated comedic talents. As Rick Ford, Statham played a grizzled CIA operative who believes himself to be flawless while he’s the one constantly making mistakes.

One of the most impressive things aboutSpywas the way that Statham leaned into his action hero persona for maximum comedic effect and it was enjoyable to watch him make fun of himself in this manner.Spyhas plenty of potential for a sequel and Feig even said in 2015 that he had started writing one (viaGuardian.) While this has yet to materialize, it would be incredible to see Statham reprise this uniquely hilarious character.

7Homefront (2013)

Jason Statham as Phil Broker

Homefrontwas an action movie that had serious potential as afranchise starter from Jason Statham and Sylvester Stallone. However, this adaptation of a novel by Chuck Logan made the fatal mistake of basing its screenplay on the final entry in a long-running series that could have carried many movies starring Statham as the retired DEA agent Phil Broker. While the finality ofHomefrontmade a sequel unlikely from the start, the wealth of material from Logan means there’s a lot of potential to turn it into a series in the form of prequels.

Homefront’sunderwhelming critical reception also meant a follow-up movie was unlikely, which was a real shame as it acted as an enjoyable homage to classic action thrillers of the past. While screenwriterStallone and its star Statham continued working togetheronThe Expendablesseries, it would be nice to also see them flesh out Broker’s world even further. Currently, there are no plans for aHomefrontsequel, but with a back catalog filled with incredible action movies, this would be a great one to return to.

This instigating event led to many awesome Beekeeper scenes that saw Statham’s enemies attacked by swarms of bees and even being catapulted off a bridge.

The rich worldbuilding ofThe Beekepeerintroduced a fascinating underworld of special operatives and, similar to theJohn Wickfranchise, hinted at a rich mythology that’s begging to be explored in future installments. As a no-nonsense action hero, Adam Clay has the potential to become a major figure in the world of action movies if follow-up films can maintain the fun energy of the original. While a sequel toThe Beekeeperhas not been officially announced, its smash success and $152 million at the global box office (via Box Office Mojo) mean a second film is practically a certainty.

5Fast & Furious Presents: Hobbs & Shaw (2019)

Jason Statham as Deckard Shaw

Jason Statham has certainly left his mark on theFast & Furiousfranchise with his role as the former British Special Forces and MI6 mercenary Deckard Shaw. As the primary villain ofFurious 7, Shaw appeared in many of the subsequent sequels and became so popular that he earned a spin-off film alongside Dwayne Johnson as Luke Hobbs. The mismatched buddy cop formula ofFast & Furious Presents: Hobbs & Shawworked well and opened the door for more spin-off misadventures featuring the sinister antihero.

While there was discussion about a direct sequel featuring Statham and Johnson, these plans were later postponed as Johnson hinted at another spin-off film titledHobbs & Reyeswith Johnson and Jason Momoa set to star (viaMovieWeb.) Jason Statham as Jonas Taylor

The Megfranchise has been a major hit at the box office as the sequel to 2018’sThe Megtook in nearly $400 million at the global box office (viaBox Office Mojo.) WhileMeg 3has yet to be officially announced,it would be surprising if Statham did not return as the rescue diver Jonas Taylorfor yet another underwater encounter with prehistoric creatures. With awe-inspiring visuals and clear interest from audiences,The Megfranchise has showcased the viability of shark movies almost 50 years afterJawswas released.

The plot for a potential thirdMegmovie would likely adapt the story outlined in the original novels by Steve Alten. 3Crank: High Voltage (2009)

Jason Statham as Chev Chelios

More so than any other film,Crankwas anaction movie with the look and feel of a video gameas Jason Statham engaged in someGrand Theft Auto-esque carnage. As Chev Chelios, Statham portrayed a professional assassin injected with a poison that would kill him if his heart rate dropped, meaning the outrageous had to remain high from start to finish. The sequelCrank: High Voltagekept up this intensity as Chev had one hour to find a replacement heart after he had been abducted, and it was switched with an artificial one.

As a truly bonkers set of movies,it would be thrilling to see Statham play Chev one more time to complete the trilogy. The possibilities are endless for what kind of absurd set of circumstances would send Chev on yet another wild rampage as he races against the clock in a life-or-death fight for survival. Director Brian Taylor hinted at the potential forCrank 3in a 2013Reddit AMA, and although Statham’s career has developed a lot since then, it would still be fantastic to see him come back for one more movie.

The fourth movie in the series,Expend4bles, kept this action-packed franchise interesting as Stallone’s Barney Ross began to pass the torch of team leader to Statham’s character. This means thata fifthExpendablesmovie would likely feature Statham as the main staronce again and showcase his increased development as the crew leader.
