The reason this version of Spider-Man was so brutal is due to the death of Mary Jane. With her gone, he has nothing left to lose and is willing to use any means to save the world one last time. Robbie was the city editor ofThe Daily Bugleand helped Peter climb the ranks, encouraging his work where J. Jonah Jameson wouldn’t. Robbie kept Jonah’s more absurd and inflammatory stories about Spider-Man from going live. While Jonah wanted to useThe Daily Bugleto paint Spider-Man as a menace, Robbie often talked him out of it.
This makes Robbie someone very important to Peter, but in this dark world, all Peter wants is to reunite with Mary Jane, and nothing will stop him. After breaking into his and Mary Jane’s old apartment, Peter eventually confronts Jonah about where MJ is. Robbie tries to calm Spider-Man down, but Jonah fires a shotgun at the Webslinger. Peter evades the blast, which hits and kills Robbie, instead.It’s a brutal moment and shows just how far this Spider-Man has fallen, as he is entirely putting his own happiness above anything and anyone else.
Robbie Suffers A Brutal Death Due To Spider-Man’s Selfishness
One of the most important aspects of Spider-Man’s character is his sense of responsibility. Power without responsibility to wield it is just chaos, and as Spider-Man only cares about finding his lost wife, he’s causing death and destruction to everyone he encounters. While Spider-Man had already killed two villains, they at least were trying to kill him first. Robbie is a complete innocent, and his death is entirely Spider-Man’s fault. WhileSpider-Mandoesend up finding Mary Jane in this twisted world, it certainly isn’t worth the death he causes to do it.
