Was Ellie Dubaich Right To Wake Up Chef Jono?
The Conflict Between Ellie & Jono Set The Mood For Charter Season
During an episode ofBravo’sBelow DeckAfter Show, Ellie remarked, “He blatantly disregarded the guest’s specific preferences. He was reminded of that in the middle of the night.” Ellie continued by saying Jono “still didn’t care to get up and fix his mistake.“These comments referred to an incident at the beginning of the charter season in which Ellie tried to wake Chef Jono upso that he could make late-night snacks for the guests. Chef Jono refused to get up and make any food, which angered Ellie, and they ended up having a conflict that Captain Sandy diffused.
During the After Show, former Chief Stew Kate Chastain commented, “I never wake up the chef. The guests are usually drunk, and they won’t remember. But you know who will remember? The chef. And I have to work with him after these guests leave.” However, Kate wasn’t the only one who came to Chef Jono’s defense. Captain Sandy actually said she believed Chef Jono handled it well because she had seen chefs throw things at people when they were woken up.Captain Sandy reprimanded Ellie for waking him up, telling her he had a very hard job and needed rest.
Ellie felt that it was the chef’s duty to be on call for the guests' every whim, but Chef Jono argued that he had already been making meals the entire day and needed sleep due to his exhaustion. In previous seasons across theBelow Deckfranchise, most stews agreed not to wake the chef under any circumstances. Generally, stews tried to handle the basic requests of the guests, which, in this case, included grilled cheese sandwiches, nachos, and mac and cheese. ThisBelow Deck Medconflict ended upsetting the mood for the entire season, which has been filled with nonstop conflict.
It would be prudent for the interior crew to know how to make simple snacks and meals for the guests when the chef takes some much-needed time off. Unlike the interior and exterior crews, the chefs on any of theBelow Deckshows generally work alone. Every carrot that needs to be chopped and every fish that needs to be cooked delicately has to be done by the chef. While Ellie may have felt that anything food-related was the chef’s responsibility, there are times when flexibility in a job’s obligations can be a tremendous asset to the entire crew.
