Dandadanis on the verge of its finale with episode #12, and episode #11 couldn’t have been a better lead-in to that. While not as intense as the episodes that came before it, episode #11 nonetheless did a great job of playing into the series’ strengths, arguably better than any other episode, and as always, it left a lot to be excited about.
Dandadanepisode #11 continued where episode #10 left off with the introduction ofJiji, Momo’s childhood friend and first love. With his personal connection to Momo, Okarun became afraid that Jiji would disrupt his friendship with Momo and started distancing himself from them because of that, but oddly enough, all the drama surrounding Momo, Okarun, and Jiji came to a head thanks to the sudden appearance of a sentient anatomical model. It was as bizarre and heartfelt an episode as one could expect fromDandadan, and it was great to see that so close to the impending finale.

What Happened In Dandadan Episode 11?
Produced By Science Saru; Directed By Tooru Hasuya
Dandadanepisode #11, “First Love”, continued where episode #10 left off with everyone, especially Okarun, surprised not only by Jiji’s appearance, but that he was moving in with Momo, as well. Okarun and Aira both quickly left, Okarun doing so more awkwardly than Aira, and it was then that the true reason for Jiji’s appearance was revealed:Jiji’s home was haunted by an evil spirit, and he needed Seiko’s help to exorcise so it wouldn’t keep hurting people. Seiko, however, passed the job onto Momo, with Momo agreeing under the condition that Seiko would buy her a new uniform.
The next day at school, Jiji was quick to win over Momo’s classmates, despite his eccentric personality, and while Momo was annoyed by it all, the clear bond she had with Jiji nonetheless made things awkward between her and Okarun. As the awkwardness reached its peak, the tension between Momo, Okarun, and Jiji was disrupted by a sentient anatomical model named Taro whom Momo believed had one of Okarun’s testicles. Momo tried to subdue Taro with her powers, but she and Jiji, who was clinging onto Momo, ended up being dragged through the air as Taro ran through town.

Okarun was quick to catch up to Taro and save Momo and Jiji, and when Momo broke Taro’s heart out of his body, they finally got Taro to stop running through town. At that point, though, Taro had already arrived at his destination: the town dump where his love, another sentient anatomical model named Hana, was buried. Taro professed his love for Hana against the light of the setting sun, and as Okarun watched the scene unfold,Okarun realized the reason he was so upset about everything with Jiji was that he was in love with Momo.
Dandadan Continues To Perfectly Avoid A Tiresome Romance Cliché
Earlier in the series,Dandadandid a great job of avoiding the typical pitfalls of a love triangle withMomo, Okarun, and Aira’s dynamic, and episode #11 was no different. Not only is Jiji quickly rendered a non-threat because of his eccentric personality, but when Momo’s classmates tease her and Jiji about their relationship, one of Momo’s friends interjects by defending her relationship with Okarun.Dandadanonce again makes its love triangles a non-issue through how the new characters are written and how much emphasis is put on Momo and Okarun’s relationship, and as always, that’s great to see.
Dandadan Delivers A Perfect Penultimate Episode On All Fronts
Dandadanepisode #11 should be the penultimate episode of the series, and by all accounts, it was a perfect one. For starters, while it wasn’t as over-the-top as some of the previous episodes,Dandadanepisode #11 was another episode with gorgeous animation and overall visuals from start to finish, with the entire chase sequence involving Taro being fun to watch in every regard. The storyboard artist for episode #11, Shinsaku Sasaki, is a veteran animator whose past work includes the Studio Ghibli filmsOnly Yesterday,Porco Rosso, andPrincess Mononoke, and that experience was on full display in episode #11.
More than that, of course, was the story content of episode #11. Between the comedy from Jiji and Taro’s characters and how well the anime continued to developMomo and Okarun’s relationship, especially with Okarun’s epiphany about his feelings for Momo,Dandadanepisode #11 did a perfect job of balancing comedy and emotional writing to a degree not seen in any episode before it. Even this late into the story,Dandadancontinues to excel in every field imaginable, and with any luck, the finale will be no different.

Be sure to watchDandadanepisode #12 when it releases on Thursday, December 19.
