Dark Souls 3may not be the FromSoftware game enthusiasts want to see remastered but if the rumors are true it’s what players can expect. Ever since its release in 2015, FromSoftware fans have begged the studio and publisher Sony to bringBloodborneto modern platforms and free it from its PlayStation 4 exclusivity. Reports have swirled for years that the game will eventually make a return butthe latest round of whispers claim a different FromSoftware masterpiece is getting ready to step back into the spotlight.

According to reputable insider Nick Baker, speaking onThe XboxEra Podcast,a remastered version ofDark Souls 3is currently in development.

Dark Souls 3 has a hidden connection to Demon’s Souls

It’s worth noting, as with all rumors, that fans should take this revelation with a pinch of salt until some kind of confirmation or official announcement is provided. ConsideringDark Souls 3’s age (it’s nearly a decade old)it stands to reason that FromSoftware would want to breathe new life into iteven if many fans think the game doesn’t necessarily need an upgrade.

Does Dark Souls 3 Need A Remaster?

It Certainly Wouldn’t Hurt

From a mechanical perspective,Dark Souls 3still plays incredibly well. Its combat still holds up eight years after its release in 2016: While it retains the moreconsidered pace of previousDark Soulsgames, one can also feel some ofBloodborne’s speed and combos, making it more approachableand fun. Having said that, its graphics could do with some improvements and while it’s certainly not an ugly game (far from it), the benefits of today’s hardware can’t be understated.

Dark Souls 3may have received an FPS boost on modern consoles, but its performance can still be rather jittery, especially during boss encountersrequiring players to dodge attacks that generate plenty of particle effects. One can imagine a remaster introducing a stable 60fps mode as well as upgrades for all textures and character models, perhaps bringing it up toElden Ring’s standard.Dark Souls 3is the only game in the trilogy to not be remasteredso it stands to reason that FromSoftware would eventually get around to it.

Dark Souls 3 Remastered Could Be Good

But It’s Not What Fans Want

As is likely the case with many fans,I’m excited to see whether a remaster ofDark Souls 3does come to fruitionbut knowing that we’re potentially getting such a project before aBloodborneremaster is disappointing. The PS4 exclusive is one of my favorite games and as much as I appreciate the thirdDark Souls, it just doesn’t scratch the same itch. I’ll still play an upgradedDark Souls 3but that won’t prevent me from campaigning toseeBloodbornecome to PC.
