Summary

Inside Out 2introduced new emotions as Riley entered a new phase, but as there was a lot to explore in Riley’s life and with the new arrivals, some scenes had to be left out. Pixar continues to dominate the world of animation, and amid its original stories, it went back to the world of 2015’sInside Outto carry on with Riley’s story. Pete Docter’sInside Outintroduced the audience to 11-year-old Riley and the emotions that live inside her mind and administer her thoughts and actions: Joy, Sadness, Anger, Fear, and Disgust, with Joy being the leader.

Almost a decade later, Pixar returned toInside Outwith a sequel, directed by Kelsey Mann and simply titledInside Out 2. Set two years after the first movie,Inside Out 2reunites the audience with Riley, now a 13-year-old girl who is about to enter high school and has just entered puberty. Riley attends an ice hockey camp with her best friends but learns that they won’t be going to the same school as her. Riley also feels the pressure to fit in with her school’s team, the Firehawks, and it’s all made more complicated by the arrival of new emotions.

Inside Out 2 Ending Explained

Inside Out 2’s emotional ending highlights Riley’s character growth and builds on the underlying moral themes of the original Inside Out.

To the surprise of Joy, Sadness, Anger, Disgust, and Fear, with puberty came new emotions: Envy, Embarrassment, Ennui, and Anxiety, the latter serving as their leader. Unfortunately, Anxiety takes over and Joy and company are kicked out of the Headquarters, but they all learn to coexist and work together for Riley’s benefit. As Riley grows up, her story and emotions become more complex, so it’s understandable that some scenes had to be cut, and some of them have already been revealed.

5Inside Out 2 Almost Visited “Puberty Park”

Inside Out 2 Could Have Gone Deeper Into Puberty

Joy and company almost had to cross a very peculiar (and new to them) amusement park called “Puberty Park”, which is exactly what it sounds like.

As mentioned above,Inside Out 2saw Riley entering puberty, which was a big surprise to her and her parents. Riley suddenly woke up with acne, mood swings, and more, which didn’t make the news of her friends going to another school and the pressure of hockey camp any lighter. Meanwhile, in Riley’s mind, in addition to dealing with Anxiety and her crew, Joy and company almost had to cross a very peculiar (and new to them) amusement park called “Puberty Park”, which is exactly what it sounds like.

All 5 New Emotions In Inside Out 2 Explained

Pixar’s Inside Out 2 sees Riley go through puberty, which means a host of brand new emotion characters to make her life a little more complicated.

Director Kelsey Mann explained (viaIGN) that he had a list of mind idioms from the first movie, and the one that stood out to him was “mood swings”. This gave Mann the idea of an amusement park ride, with the sketches showing how it would have spun like crazy when Riley was happy, how it would have dropped when Riley got sad, dragging those riding on the ground, and the image of sadness on the ride would have cried.

Inside Out 2 Poster Showing Joy and the Other Emotions Squished Together

Mann then came up with the idea of an amusement park that was “teenage-based”, and the emotions would have had to run through it. The idea was storyboarded, but according to Mann, even though they loved the idea and it was quite funny, they realizedthey were missing how to connect it to Riley’s story on the outside, as it was too focused on the inside. The scene shows Puberty Park being managed by teenager-like characters, and the emotions would have learned that the police were looking for them as they handed out “wanted posters” with their faces on them.

4Inside Out 2’s “Never Have I Ever” Scene Would Have Seen Another Emotion

Shame Was Almost Introduced In Inside Out 2

It’s now known that Anxiety, Envy, Embarrassment, and Ennui weren’t the onlyemotions that were going to be introduced inInside Out 2. However, many of them didn’t make it past a concept in pre-production, but others went as far as being storyboarded. Originally, Anxiety was going to be accompanied by another, similar emotion that would have brought even more complexity and conflict to Riley’s story: Shame, who would have made her appearance in a scene called “Shame Spiral” (viaEW).

Anxiety and Shame appeared together, and the idea was for Shame to get out of control and cause a storm at the Headquarters.

Mann explained that he wantedInside Out 2to be about exploring the feeling of not being “good enough” and being hard on oneself. Mann felt this was captured in “Shame Spiral”, which was going to be near the end of the film as part ofInside Out 2’s climax. The scene took place at a party Riley was invited to with older teenagers, some of whom she met at hockey camp. The teens started playing “Never Have I Ever”, with Riley shyly joining.

In this scene, Anxiety and Shame appeared together, and the idea was for Shame to get out of control and cause a storm at the Headquarters. The scene shows Shame as a beautiful woman with long, flowing hair she uses to hide as her emotion grows and grows in Riley.Shame is triggered when Riley’s friend Grace puts her on the spot in front of everyone, which triggers a fight between Riley and Grace, making the feeling of Shame stronger. In the end,Shame and Anxiety were simplified into Anxietyand Shame’s storm became Anxiety’s attack.

3Inside Out 2 Could Have Seen Joy Struggling

“Broken Joy” Would Have Seen Joy Completely Vulnerable

“Broken Joy” would have explored Joy’s problems inInside Out 2, and it would have started with Joy not being able to use the console.

Joy has had her vulnerable moments in bothInside Outmovies, butInside Out 2almost took it further. Ina scene titled “Broken Joy”, shared byScreen Rant, Mann wanted to take the audience deeper into Joy’s character and what wasn’t shown on-screen about her life at the Headquarters in the first movie. Mann was mostly intrigued by the room where the emotions sleep, which was only shown from the outside when Joy woke up the rest by playing the accordion outside their window.

Mann explained that “Broken Joy” would have explored Joy’s problems inInside Out 2, and it would have started with Joy not being able to use the console and not responding to her. This would have been Riley’s way of rejecting the emotion of Joy, but the problem was in how they were going to connect this with Joy inside Riley’s mind. The scene shows Riley going through her clothes as she prepares for a party(a pool party that was also at the core of another deleted scene).

Riley finds a swimsuit with a drawing of the sun that Joy finds funny and uses the console, with Riley smiling as she reaches out for the swimsuit.Joy’s light glitches and the console goes back to its place, with Riley not taking the swimsuit. Joy tries to use the console again and struggles for a bit before she finally does it and Riley happily takes the swimsuit. The emotions then go to sleep, with Anger taking the night shift, and Joy’s light continues to glitch when she’s in her bed.Joy opens up to Sadness about what happened, and the scene ends.

Although this scene with Joy struggling and opening up to Sadness about it in their room was cut, they decided to keep the bedroom set as they loved it. The scene would have felt off inInside Out 2, but at least it made way for a fun look at the emotions’ bedroom, which had some Easter eggs of its own.

Inside Out 2’s 21 Easter Eggs & Pixar References Explained

Inside Out 2, the long-awaited sequel to Pixar’s beloved 2015 movie Inside Out, contains a number of Easter eggs and references to other Pixar movies.

2Inside Out 2 Could Have Turned Anxiety Into Self-Loathing

Anxiety Almost Went Through A Huge Transformation

The scene titled “Pool Party” is described by Mann as a “cringe sequence” as it was all about teenage awkwardness.

Inside Out 2could have seen the emotions meeting others or blending with them, as was the case for Anxiety. The scene titled “Pool Party” is described by Mann as a “cringe sequence” as it was all about teenage awkwardness. The context of the scene was Riley preparing for a pool party she was invited to that would be attended by high schoolers. The scene was quite fitting withInside Out 2’s themes of puberty and being a teenager, asit would have covered the feeling of becoming self-conscious about one’s bodyin a scenario like a pool party with your future schoolmates.

Riley would have worn the swimsuit that Joy picked in the scene “Broken Joy”, but once at the party, Riley would have found that the colorful swimsuit wasn’t entirely appropriate for a high school pool party. In this scene,an early design of Anxiety morphed into the emotion of Self-Loathing, but Mann explained they felt this emotion came out as a cardboard-like villain. Although this scene ended up not being made, it changed howInside Out 2approached the character of Anxiety.

Thanks to this scene, Mann and company made sure that Anxiety always acted from a place of love and wanting to protect Riley at all times. At the party, after Grace leaves with her crush, Joy decides that Riley should do a cannonball jump in the pool, but Anxiety stops her and makes her self-conscious of her swimsuit when she notices the rest are wearing two-piece suits. Anxiety then calls Ennui to do her thing, and the sketched scene ends there.

1Inside Out 2 Could Have Shown Another Of Riley’s Talents

Riley Can Do A Lot More Than Play Hockey

Inside Outestablished Riley’s love for ice hockey and the sequel went deeper into it and her skills, but it could have also shown some of her other talents. Another cut scene fromInside Out 2is called “Cold Open”, and according to Mann, it’s from the first screening of the movie. The scene was made to catch the audience’s attention right away and immediately take them into what Riley was going through now as a young teenager who is very self-conscious – and the best way to show all this and more was through a talent show.

Riley got even more nervous and struggled to carry on with the song.

The scene saw Riley on the stage with her ukelele and introducing herself. She then started playing a song she wrote but she dropped the pick. Riley then elbowed the microphone and caught it before it fell, and continued playing her song. However, Riley got even more nervous and struggled to carry on with the song, and as an extra visual detail to show how nervous and anxious she was, she got big sweat stains on her t-shirt.

In the end, the scene was cut as it didn’t support the rest of the story inInside Out 2, as the movie later focuses on Riley’s love for hockey, so by removing “Cold Open”, they were truer to Riley’s character. It’s known that Riley has other talents, so hopefully, some of them will be explored in future movies or other media.
