Summary

Fallout 4players are offered a few options on how to complete the “Duty or Dishonor” quest, with all of their options coming down to how to handle Initiate Clarke. The quest starts with players being asked by Captain Kells of theBrotherhood of Steelto look into some missing supplies. After a quick conversation with Knight Sergeant Gavil, players are directed to speak with Knight Lucia and Initiate Clarke, the two most likely suspects.

After some investigating, the player will be tasked with following Initiate Clarke to the Boston Airport ruins. After fighting their way through some feral ghouls, players will eventually find Initiate Clarke and discover that he was in fact behind the missing supplies. Players will have to be careful about how they approach Clarke, and what actions they take in front of him, or else they may unintentionally initiate combat with him. While killing Clarke is an option in “Duty of Dishonor,” confronting him results in the player having to make a tough decision.

What Happens If Players Tell Clarke To Leave The Brotherhood Of Steel?

Players Can Convince Clarke To Leave The Brotherhood & Avoid Punishment

For players to be able to safely talk to Initiate Clarke, they will need tomake sure they don’t kill any ghouls in his sight. They will also have to make sure they talk to him before entering the room next to the one he is in. Players then learn that Clarke felt immense guilt over killing feral ghouls who were once human. Clarke was stealing food to feed the remaining feral ghouls at the airport to see if he could help them recapture some sense of their humanity.

Once players talk with Clarke, they are presented with four options for how to finish the quest. They can convince him to turn himself in, convince him to leave the Brotherhood, lie to the Brotherhood about Clarke’s actions, or kill Clarke. There is one clear best option based on thisFallout 4quest’s rewards.

If players convince Clarke that he should leave the Brotherhood, they are given two choices about how to handle things when returning to Captain Kells. They can either lie and keep Clarke’s actions secret, or tell Kells that Clarke is the one who did it. Either way,the player will earn 50 caps and experiencefor completing the quest.

If players take this route, they may also run into Clarke later in the Wasteland. During on ofFallout 4’s random encounters, players will stumble upon Clarke accompanied by several feral ghouls. The ghouls aren’t hostile towards Clarke, but they will attack the player if approached. Killing them will anger Clarke and prompt a conversation with him after combat. There aren’t too many benefits from handling the quest this way, so players may want to try one of the other routes.

What Happens If Players Lie For Clarke?

Clarke Won’t Be Punished, But Players Aren’t Well Rewarded

Players are able to complete “Duty or Dishonor” by returning to Captain Kells and lying about who has been stealing the food. This will allow Clarke to remain a member of the Brotherhood of Steel, and presumably continue his attempts to help the ghouls at the airport. This will allow the player to complete the quest without making too much of a change to the status quo, and allow Clarke to participate in some big story events later on in the game.

If Clarke stays in the Brotherhood and players are able to successfully lie about his involvement with the missing food, they will later meet up with him on the Prydwen. There, Clarke will tell them that he is going to be promoted to a knight soon. Clarke will also appear in the “Ad Victoriam” quest with Lucia. This route presents a slightly kinder fate for Clarke, as he isn’t forced to leave his faction and wander the Wasteland on his own. That said, it still might not be the best route for the player.

What Happens If Players Kill Clarke?

Killing Clarke Earns Players Caps But Little Else

If players either decide to kill Clarke, or accidentally trigger combat with him, they will still be able to complete the quest. Returning to Captain Kells and telling him that Clarke was responsible and that he is dead will net the player 100 caps and experience for finishing the quest. If this is the route the player decides to take, they will obviously not be able to encounter Clarke later in the game.

Killing Clarke is probably the worst optionfor completing this quest. The only real reason for a player to go about finishing “Duty or Dishonor” this way is if they accidentally trigger combat with Clarke and don’t want to save scum their way out of the pickle. Even players who are trying to do a run ofFallout 4where they make evil choices have little incentive to kill Clarke, since they can earn a better reward from the quest through other means.

What Happens If Players Have Clarke Turn Himself In?

Having Clarke Turn Himself In Gets Players The Best Quest Reward

The final option for completing “Duty or Dishonor” is to convince Clarke to turn himself into the Brotherhood of Steel and face judgment for his actions.Players who do this will receive the Exemplar’s T-60c torsofor their power armor. This piece reduces the AP cost of VATS by 10%, and it can only be obtained by getting Clarke to turn himself in.

If players convince Clarke to turn himself in, he will be sent to a locked cell in the Cambridge Police Station. If players decide to side with The Railroad in their conflict against the Brotherhood of Steel, players will have the option to let Clarke out. They can do so during the “Precipice of War” quest, and Clarke will not be hostile towards the player or the Railroad like other members of the Brotherhood.

Convincing Clarke to turn himself into the Brotherhood of Steel is probably the best outcome for players, at least from a gameplay standpoint. Most rewards for “Duty or Dishonor” are pretty underwhelming, with the Power Armor chest piece gained from this route being the only exception. Convincing Clarke to turn himself in also auto-completes the optional task of killing the Ghouls in the airport, which will earn the player some extra experience.

From a roleplaying or moral standpoint, players may be a little more torn about which route is the best to take. Sure, Clarke can be set free later if he is convinced to turn himself in, but that is only if players decide to side against the Brotherhood. If players prefer to work with the Brotherhood and don’t want to see Clarke dead or imprisoned, they may choose to lie for him. It does mean missing out on some ofFallout 4’s better gear, but it may weigh less heavily on players’ consciences.
