Throughout its 10 seasons,Friendshad various famous guest stars, but there’s one that the show completely failed, and I’m still not over it, especially after watching him in another sitcom.Friendsearned a spot in TV history with its format, popularity, and behind-the-scenes achievements, and even two decades after its ending, the show is still quite popular. The success ofFriendsduring its run led it to have various guest stars, of which some stayed for a couple of episodes and others had short-lived stories.
The stories of Monica, Chandler, Joey, Phoebe, Rachel, and Ross made way for some colorful characters throughout the10 seasons ofFriends, of which some were fun allies, romantic interests, and others simply arrived to shake things up a bit.Friends’ guest starsinclude big names like Jean-Claude Van Damme, Julia Roberts, Bruce Willis, and Reese Witherspoon, many of them having short but memorable appearances. However, there’s one guest star inFriendsseason 9 that I feel was wasted, and another sitcom further proved it.

Friends Wasted Dermot Mulroney In Season 9 (& Left Gavin’s Story Incomplete)
Gavin Was Only Around For Three Episodes In Friends Season 9
Friendsseason 9 sees Ross and Rachel adapting to co-parenting, while Rachel develops feelings for Joey and Ross meets Charlie. However, beforeRachel and Joey get together(and become one of the most divisive pairs inFriendshistory), Rachel meets Gavin (Dermot Mulroney) when she visits work. Gavin took over her job while she was on maternity leave, but after seeing how he won her boss over and how everyone loves him, Rachel decides to go back to work before her leave is over.
Gavin and Rachel have a rivalry at first, but she begins to appreciate him when he looks after Emma for her so she can give a presentation at work. Gavin later shows up at the end of Rachel’s birthday party, where he admits his feelings for Rachel and they kiss on the balcony, unaware that Ross can see them from his apartment. Gavin later learns how complicatedRoss and Rachel’s relationshipis and he and Rachel agree not to pursue anything – and that’s the last time Gavin is seen inFriends.

Dermot Mulroney’s 10 Best Movies And TV Shows
Dermot Mulroney has built an impressive filmography over four decades, with great performances in some incredible movies and TV shows.
Dermot Mulroney was already rom-com royalty back then, and his undeniable charm made him perfect for a character like Gavin– and yet,Friendscompletely wasted him with a three-episode appearance. Gavin’s presence was only used so that Ross could complain to Rachel about her love life later on, which he could have done even if Gavin had never appeared. Not only did Mulroney deserve a bigger (even if brief) role inFriendsin which he could fully display his charm and comedic skills, butFriendsshould have also given Gavin proper closure, instead of just forgetting about him.

Dermot Mulroney’s Sitcom Role 9 Years Later Makes His Brief Friends Appearance More Frustrating
Almost a decade after playing Gavin in season 9 ofFriends, Dermot Mulroney had a recurring role inNew Girl. Mulroney played Russell Schiller, the father of one of Jess’ (Zooey Deschanel) students. Russell is wealthy and one of the largest donors in the city, and, contrary to what Jess initially thinks, he’s very kind and generous.Russell and Jess date for a while inNew Girlseason 1, and he returns in the show’s final season to declare his feelings for Jess and even tries to prevent her wedding.
New Girl: All 7 Of Jess Day’s Boyfriends Explained
New Girl saw Jess moving on from a painful break-up, and before settling down, she dated various men, all with a different story. Let’s take a look.
New Girlgave Russell a proper storyline and a conclusion to it, and thatgave Mulroney the chance to show his comedic talents along with that rom-com charm that is so natural in him.New Girl’s Russell is whatFriends’ Gavin could have been but never was, and though it frustrates me that Dermot Mulroney was wasted inFriends, at least we got to see him in a much better sitcom role inNew Girl.
