Marvel’sStar Warscomics are full of doppelgängers and dark opposites, as the franchise has readily embraced the “evil twin” trope, with each of the franchise’s major heroes coming face-to-face with their villainous, or at least less morally resolute, counterparts. Now, Marvel continues this trend, taking it one step further andrecreating a classic original trilogy scene with a twist.

In the story “Rogue’s Gambit,” fromStar Wars: A New Legacy (2025)#1– written by Kieron Gillen, with art by Salvador Espin – a collection of “dark opposite” characters, including Doctor Aphra, Black Krrsantan, BT-1, and 0-0-0, travel on board theArk Angel.

BEETEE and Triple-Zero are, of course, sinister reflections of classic characters R2-D2 and C-3P0, except BEETEE and Trip were both painted black, and had very different functions. BT-1 was designed by the Tarkin Initiative to fool others into thinking he was a regular Astromech droid like R2-D2, but he was a Blastomech prototype loaded with several blaster rifles, flamethrowers, missile launchers, and a circular saw. BEETEE ended up killing the entire staff of the Tarkin Initiative base and was found floating in space by Doctor Aphra, who couldn’t reactivate him without the help of 0-0-0.

Star Wars Destroyed Black Krrsantan’s Mystique with C-3PO’s Secret Weapon

The mystique of the intimidating Black Krrsantan was destroyed by C-3PO’s secret weapon. The droid proved that the Wookiee is ultimately no match.

The 0-0-0 Protocol Personality Matrix was created during the time of the Old Republic, and was described by its creator as the most perfectly psychotic personality that has ever been created. Horrified by his creation, the creator ordered his droid assistant to destroy the matrix, but the 0-0-0 personality took over the droid and killed his creator, then roamed the galaxy on a killing spree before it was separated from its droid and locked away in quarantine. During the reign of the Empire, Doctor Aphra stole the matrix and inserted it into a protocol droid, adding murder to its programming.

Doctor Aphra & Black Krrsantan, Two Lowlifes Looking for A Place To Fit In

Han Solo & Chewbacca’s Mirror Characters, Explained

Doctor Chelli Lona Aphra is an archaeologistwith a knack for droid customization, and anything to do with technology and ancient artifacts. Aphra is a scoundrel and a swindler, willing to do anything to anyone else as long as she ends up on top. Aphra is not as evil as her two murder droids, but she is an antagonist to the Rebel heroes, and a former ally of Darth Vader.Aphra is most similar to the smuggler Han Solo, though she was actuallyconceived as the Star Wars version of Indiana Jones, who was coincidentally also portrayed by Harrison Ford.

Star Wars Revisits Doctor Aphra’s Betrayal of Darth Vader

A new preview from StarWars.com shows Doctor Aphra reflecting on the last interaction she had with Vader since she may be facing him very soon.

Black Krrsantan is a Wookiee like Chewbacca. He escaped from his homeworld Kashyyyk and became a gladiator for the Xonti Brothers, who caged him and mistreated him. The Xonti Brothers hired the doctor Cylo to enhance Krrsantan’s skeleton, implanting metal in his fists to give him permanent knuckle dusters. Krrsantan became a bounty hunter and worked for employers such as Jabba the Hutt, Darth Vader, Doctor Aphra, and Boba Fett. Krrsantan’s life goal was to take revenge on the Xonti Brothers for how they treated him in the fighting pits, and with the help of Aphra, he eventually did.

Luke Skywalker & Princess Leia Were Not The Only Twins Hunted By Darth Vader

These parallels go beyond just the characters who appeared in “Rogue’s Gambit” fromA New Legacy;for example, Morit and Aiolin Astarte were twins, like Luke Skywalker and Princess Leia, and enhanced by Doctor Cylo to make them more machine than man, like Darth Vader. Though the twins were absent of the force, their enhancements allowed them to perform force-like feats. The twins were part of Emperor Palpatine’s plan to find a suitable replacement for Vader after he failed to stop the first Death Star’s destruction. Morit and Aiolin were two of doctor Cylo’s creations, backed by Palpatine’s funding.

Star Wars, I’m Begging: You Have to Stop Sleeping on One of Your Best Weapons

Star Wars created one of the greatest countermeasures for the Jedi long ago, but the franchise continues to ignore this incredible weapon.

All these characters were created by Kieron Gillen as part of Marvel’s 2015Darth Vaderseries, each of them making an appearance fairly early on. Now, for the fifteenth anniversary of Marvel returning to Star Wars publishing, Gillen once again gathers all of his characters (except for Morit and Aiolin Astarte) inA New Legacy.A lot of theseStar Warscharacters have become a lot more popular since their first appearance, receiving action figures in Hasbro’s Black Series line and even appearing in live-action, like Krrsantan.
