Warning: Spoilers ahead forFuturamaseason 12, episode 5, “One is Silicon and the Other Gold.“Futuramaseason 12, episode 5, “One is Silicon and the Other Gold,” brilliantly parodies the shocking story of Fyre Festival, but the sitcom’s take on the failed event comes very close to actually improving upon the real-world occurrence. The episode’s take on Fyre Festival doesn’t quite make the list ofFuturama’s darkest jokes, but the satirical commentary does highlight just how doomed to fail the event was. TheFuturamacastdoes a terrific job of keeping it light, while the writers perfectly poke fun at what happened.

WhileFuturamawill often parody other sci-fi movies and TV shows, it’s not completely unheard of for the show to pay homage to other parts of popular culture and controversial news stories.Futuramawasn’t on the air when Fyre Fest happened, so it would have been impossible for the sitcom to address it at the time. However, “One is Silicon and the Other Gold” is finally allowingFuturamato reference the infamous festival that never was.

Futurama is one of the best comedies on TV. From “Jurassic Bark” to “The Luck of the Fryrish,” there are many iconic episodes that never get old.

What Futurama Season 12’s Infyrno Fest Story Is Actually Making Fun Of

Fyre Festival was one of the biggest controversies in modern entertainment

2017’s Fyre Festival was falsely marked as a luxury music festival, and almost every aspect of the advertising campaign was misrepresented.Futurama’s Infryno Fest story in season 12 is a direct parody of this fraudulent event. Upon arrival at the Fyre Fest site in the Bahamas, the guests - who had paid huge amounts of money for tickets - discovered that everything from the facilities to the accommodation was incredibly low quality.

Huge artists like Blink-182 and Major Lazer were slated to play at Fyre Festival, but they all pulled out of the event when the reality of the situation was made public by arriving attendees and influencers. Each aspect of the festival’s deception is parodied inFuturama’s Infyrno Fest story, and while it may seem as though the sitcom is exaggerating, it’s not that far removed from what really happened.

Wailing Fungus playing a show at Infyrno Fest in Futurama

Fyre Festival was intended as a promotional event for the Fyre app, which was marketed as an easy way to book established musical artists. The event was scheduled to take place over two weekends in 2017: April 28-30, and May 5-7.

Futurama’s Infyrno Fest Nearly Improves On The Real Event In 1 Way

Fyre Festival ended up with no live acts due to the poor conditions

Despite the intention of Fyre Festival being for its attendees to enjoy live music, not a single artist ended up playing at the event. InFuturamaseason 12, Infryno Fest’s organizer tells Fry he managed to convince the fictitious rock band Wailing Fungus to stay and play by, “Promising them the last slice of bologna.” It may seem like a small achievement, butholding on to one act is more than what Fyre Festival managed to do.

8 Things That Happen In Every Episode Of Futurama

Futurama’s formula allows several things to happen again and again without feeling stale, with certain repeat events getting funnier each time.

Unfortunately, every member of Wailing Fungus is crushed by an enormous disco ball before they can begin the show. The stage is destroyed too. So, in the end, Infyrno Fest’s near-improvement of the event it was parodying ended up imitating the original even more. Of course,no giant disco ball fell from the sky at Fyre Festival, but that can be chalked up toFuturama’s absurdist creative license.
