Game of Thronesauthor George R. R. Martin is already involved in the development of the upcoming prequel,Aegon’s Conquest. Set 300 years before the main series, the prequel show will followAegon the Conqueror and his sisters as they wage war against Westeros with their dragons.Aegon’s Conquestwas confirmedafter the success ofHouse of the Dragonand is still in the early stages of development. Mattson Tomlin will create and write the series, while casting has yet to be confirmed.
In an interview withThe Hollywood Reporter, Tomlin explained thatMartin is always willing to answer questions by text. The creator felt that he was chosen because he related Aegon’s adventures to real-world experiences, but still regularly contacted Martin to understand more about the world of Westeros. I’m kind of shocked that he knows who I am. And anytime that I get a text message from him, I’m like, “It seems incorrect that you text. I feel like we need to correspond through handwritten letters, and I need to hire a calligrapher.” Of all of the creators, all of the cool people that I’ve gotten to meet and gotten to work with, I haven’t worked with anybody that has done what he has done — to really truly create a universe with such depth and such breadth. Going and meeting him, I just had to be honest. “I’ve read your books, I’ve seen the shows, and I’m not an encyclopedia of it. I have only come to this as somebody wanting to be entertained, and now I’m coming to it as a potential creator. And in doing so, I feel like it’s incumbent on me to acknowledge that you’re the one that’s done all of this. We’re all here because of you, dude.” I really take what he says as, “God is speaking to me.” I really do. Because at the end of the day,any question that I could have, anything I don’t understand, there’s a guy who has the answer.
I figured out a way to make it personal.And a lot of what won me the job was relating it to real life. And talking about the Romanian Revolution and talking about my mother and talking about sometimes a conquest can happen and it can be very good for the people that are being quote unquote “conquered,” but also it can split apart families. And I had things to say beyond, “the dragons come.” And that’s not an easy thing to do, because you’re also trying to do a faithful adaptation in which the dragons come. And so having something to say that was really personal, I think that that’s why he in part chose me. And so was I nervous to get the job? of course, because for me, it’s kind of like you want these jobs, but then if you get them, then there’s this moment of going, “Now I actually have to do this.”
I’m in the middle of writing the pilot now.I’m in touch with George all the time, and I feel really, really lucky to just have the God of this world in my texts, and I can just shoot him a text and go, “What does this mean? Please help me.” And then he will send me an encyclopedia of information. So it’s all with respect and reverence and just what I want more than anything is to get to make this show and have it be something that he’s extremely proud of.
Aegon’s Conquest Will Be Difficult To Adapt To The Screen
Martin’s Involvement Will Help Tremendously.
Aegon’s Conquest was the most impactful event in recent Westerosi history, enabling the Targaryens to dominate the entire region’s culture, people, and lands. Age-old dynasties were dismantled in a day, great kings were demoted to lords, and the Faith of the Seven was forced to reckon with blasphemous rulers. The Starks and Arryns knelt, Harrenhal was burned, and House Baratheon was raised to lordship over the bodies of the old Durrandon kings. Despite all the shake-ups in Westeros, adapting this significant event inAegon’s Conquestwill be tough to bring to television.
When Aegon conquered the seven kingdoms, the people lacked the technology and resources to stand against dragons. Throughout the Conquest, Aegon and his sisters flew to every location, made threats, and burned people and castles. The Field of Fire is the most notable battle of the entire era, and even that proved to be little more than an excuse for the Targaryens to burn everyone in their way.The kings of Westeros had nothing that could stand against Aegon’s mighty dragon, Balerion, nor either of his sisters and their dragons.

If Tomlin plans to remain faithful to the story, it will be challenging to inject believable stakes. The Targaryens never lost a battle outside Dorne, and every win comes easily. Martin’s involvement should make the transition simpler, given that he has worked with TV adaptations before and knows every secret detail of Aegon’s Conquest. Martin can share the horror that Westeros faced, the brutality of Aegon’s plans, andthe influence of Aegon’s prophetic dream. His knowledge would also be vital, given his feedback onGame of ThronesandHouse of the Dragon. Even with Martin’s help,Aegon’s Conquestwill be difficult to adapt.

Aegon’s Conquest
A prequel set in the Game of Thrones universe, Aegon’s Conquest comes from writer Mattson Tomlin. It will follow Aegon Targaryen as he invades and conquers many of the seven kingdoms to unify them all. The show will explore Aegon’s rise to power and subsequent fall and is expected to provide new context on specific events in House of the Dragon and Game of Thrones.
