Summary
Moff Gideon actor Giancarlo Esposito has provided a brand-new perspective on hisThe Mandalorianvillain in a way that suggests he may have once been a true hero - or at least seen himself as such. What has made Gideon stand apart from otherStar Warsvillainsis his all-knowing attitude, which includes him truly believing in the cause he’s a part of. In this case, it’s his role in theImperial Remnantand maintaining theGalactic Empire’s power and influence over the galaxy. While this has labeled him a villain in theStar Warsgalaxy, Esposito subtly challenges this notion.
The Mandalorian Cast & Characters Guide
The Mandalorian has created a long list of new Star Wars characters and brought back some familiar ones, with an incredible cast to match.
Screen Rantis a media partner at FAN EXPO Canada, and during the panel “Exploring The Way With Giancarlo Esposito, Emily Swallow, And Temuera Morrison,” led byScreen Rant’s Jo Deckelmeier, Esposito reveals his approach to Gideon’s character that sets him up as a hero of old. He emphasizes the idea that Gideon needed to have human characteristics, which meant that behind his current evil lies what once was “a good idea.” The next step for him, then, is to ask how and why Gideon came to be labeled as a villain.

What are [Gideon’s] reasons behind doing what he wants to do? What allows him to be human? […] So he’s trying to take the power, but for what reason? And if you’re always wondering what that reason is, maybe behind it all, there is a good idea. Maybe there’s not. […]My belief, and one of the things I kinda started with, was, ‘Okay, we have heroes, but who is this guy who we want to label as a villain?‘Right?
Esposito then goes further by taking the word “villain” out of the conversation and focusing on the “hero” aspect. While Esposito doesn’t go deep into Gideon’s actual backstory, instead stating that “maybe we’ll find out eventually” what Gideon was once up to, he explains thatGideon’s motivation is likely to get people to listen to him and his ideas that he truly considers to be good. Like many people, he wants to be seen, heard, and validated, and that in turn makes him want to be seen as a hero - at all costs.

I sort of take that word [villain] out of it and go, ‘Wait a minute, he’s a hero who has fallen from grace.’ For whatever reason, we don’t need to know what that is, maybe we’ll find out eventually, but his ideas were good in his brain, but no one wanted to listen to him. So, therefore, he’s going on a mission to get you to see him, to listen to him. […]He wants to be that hero even though he’s not seen as such, and that creates someone who has all the human characteristics that you and I have.
Moff Gideon
An important and influential member of the Imperial Shadow Council, Moff Gideon was personally responsible for the Purge of Mandalore. Moff Gideon deliberately seeded reports Mandalore was uninhabitable, secretly claiming the world and beginning efforts to extract its precious beskar. Moff Gideon’s ambitious attempts to clone herself were disrupted by Din Djarin, and he died when the Mandalorians retook their homeworld.
Will Moff Gideon’s Backstory Ever Be Revealed?
Gideon’s Fate Seems to Imply his Story is Done… For Now
Esposito’s ideas about Gideon’s past certainly track, and they definitely show in his portrayal, but there’s no such opportunity to truly show Gideon’s backstory inStar Warsanytime soon. While it certainly is possible, as was done forMorgan Elsbethafter her fate inAhsokain the animatedTales of the Empireseries, it’s unlikely that it will beThe Mandalorianfranchise that tells this story. Still, whatever has motivated Gideon in the past would certainly be interesting to learn, especially given his role in Mandalore’s destruction.
This doesn’t mean it’s impossible, however, forThe Mandalorianto reveal more about Gideon. If more is revealed about theGreat Purgeitself, then more information about Gideon and his life before the Empire’s fall could also be unveiled. Until that point, Gideon’s true backstory will remain a mystery, which means that Esposito’s own thought process about Gideon being a hero fallen from grace inThe Mandalorianwill be the most that viewers will get for the time being.

The Mandalorian’s spin-off movie,The Mandalorian & Grogu, hits theaters Aug 23, 2025.
