InGreen Lantern: War Journal #11by Phillip Kennedy Johnson and Montos, John Henry Irons and Natasha work tirelessly to break into the Steelworks Tower, where Shirley is trapped inside and under attack from the Star Shroud. Shirley is protected by the construct of her deceased daughter, Ellie, who hides Shirley in a pocket dimension.

In their dimension, Ellie tells Shirley how John was inspired by his mother’s strength. Though Ellie doesn’t have a Power Ring to give to Shirley, she embraces her and the two fuse, turning Shirley into a younger version of herselfwith Green Lantern powers.
Green Lantern’s Mom Finally Gets The Power Her Son Wanted Her to Have
The Green Lantern Corps underwent massive changes when leadership of the organization was passed to the United Planets. Disagreeing with the changes Lord Premier Thaaros made, John chose to retire from active duty and returned home to take care of his ailing mother. With Shirley struggling with dementia, John made his mother a construct of his sister to keep his mother safe and provide company. This turned out to be a wise move on John’s part as his mother was eventually targeted by the Star Shroud, the shape-shifting remnants of a Green Lantern who was corrupted by the Radiant Dead.
Fans have only gotten to see Shirley Stewart in her twilight years, but even John Stewart admits that she deserved to be a Green Lantern over him. In her youth, Shirley was an active fighter for civil rights who faced challenge after challenge on top of raising John and Ellie. While Ellie can’t officially induct Shirley into the Green Lantern Corps, this is the next best thing. The Ellie construct is only a fragment of John’s power, but with his connection to the Source, the fusion of Ellie and Shirley makes John’s mother one of the strongest Green Lanterns around.

Will Green Lantern’s Mother Beat the Star Shroud?
The Star Shroud is a force unto itself and seemingly more powerful than any member of the Radiant Dead. However, John’s power was enough to beat Varron once, so there’s little doubt Ellie has the power to defeat what’s left of Varron. Plus, in her more lucid moments, Shirley does have all the wisdom and grit John Stewart is known for. It’s going to be difficult as the Star Shroud is a phenomenon that even more seasoned superheroes have struggled against. ButGreen Lantern’smother may have everything she needs to beat her foe.
