AJohn Wickspin-off centered around Halle Berry’s Sofia has been rumored for a while, yet its absence proves the franchise is making a big mistake. In theJohn Wickmovie timeline, Sofia was introduced later. Her first appearance came inJohn Wick: Chapter 3 - Parabellumas an old ally of John’s who owed him a favor. As the franchise continues to expand with a number ofupcomingJohn Wickmovies and shows, the possibility of Berry returning as Sofia only increases.

One such spin-off stems fromJohn Wick: Chapter 3as well, thestory of Ana de Armas’Ballerina. This will see Keanu Reeves return as the titular, nestled between the events ofJohn Wick 3andJohn Wick 4.Updates aboutJohn Wick 5have also been common of late, proving how much the franchise intends to expand via both mainline films and spin-offs. One spin-off that has been five years in the making centers on Sofia, yet a recent update from Halle Berry raises some questions about franchise mistakes.

Time Could Be Running Out For Halle Berry’s John Wick Spin-Off Movie

Berry’s Update Reduces The Likelihood Of A Sofia Spin-Off

A spin-off centered around Sofia first began development in 2019, shortly after the release ofJohn Wick: Chapter 3 - Parabellum.Since then, however, little of note has been provided regarding the movie. That said,Halle Berry’s recent update on theJohn Wickspin-offhints that time could be running out. Berry was asked about the status of the film during the press tour for 2024’sNever Let Go,providing an answer that is equal parts exciting and worrying for the future of theJohn Wickspin-off:

“Yeah, I wish that [storyline] would’ve happened, but that’s not the route they went [inJohn Wick: Chapter 4]. I thought that would’ve been a cool storyline. We talked about it, that’s for sure. We seeded it inJohn Wick: Chapter 3, and we’ve talked about a spinoff with Lionsgate that could potentially happen. We need to do it sooner than later, but that could potentially happen. And I love that universe. I love John Wick and I loved that character, so you never know. We’ll see.”

Evidently, Berry is unsure of whether the SofiaJohn Wickmovie is happening. As Berry outlines, the film would need to happen sooner rather than later. This could be Berry’s desire, as the actor may be looking to move away from action-heavy roles in the future. As such, Lionsgate will need to officially begin developing the SofiaJohn Wickspin-off quickly, so as to not lose its star and capitalize on the interest the story clearly possesses to many.

The Wait For Halle Berry’s John Wick Spin-Off Doesn’t Make Sense

A Sofia John Wick Movie Should Have Already Happened By Now

This update from Berry raises the question of why aJohn Wickspin-off centering around Sofia has not already happened.John Wick: Chapter 3was released in 2019, five years before Berry further expressed her willingness to be involved in the film. Since then, no movie spin-offs ofJohn Wickhave been released despiteBallerina’s production. Therefore,it is difficult to understand why Lionsgate has waited so long to produce a spin-off featuring Berry as the lead actor.

Where does Ballerina fit alongside the rest of the action franchise? Here’s our ranking of all four main John Wick movies and Ana de Armas' spinoff.

Berry is clearly willing to do the film, though even she is seemingly growing tired of the wait. Berry’s spin-off was teased first in the franchise, yet the studio has committed to other adjacent stories before Sofia’s. The reasoning behind this is anyone’s guess, but it proves the franchise is still failing to capitalize on one of the strongest spin-off ideas almost six years after the release ofJohn Wick: Chapter 3: Parabellum.

John Wick Not Making Halle Berry’s Sofia Spin-Off Would Be A Mistake

The Sofia Spin-Off Still Needs To Happen

Although Lionsgate is unsure whether to commit to Berry’s Sofia spin-off, there is no denying it still needs to happen. In fact, there is no better time for this story to be told, given the events ofJohn Wick: Chapter 4’s ending. In this film, the titular character was seemingly killed. While there are many theories that state he is still alive, it is clear the franchise is looking to potentially move beyond Reeves' character with the likes ofBallerinaand the spin-off centering around Donnie Yen’s Caine that was set up.

As evident, the stars are aligning for a Sofia spin-off to finally be produced, yet it seems increasingly unlikely this will happen…

With this in mind, failing to make a Sofia spin-off would undoubtedly be a mistake. This is only further compounded by Berry’s comments, with the actor clearly still willing to return to theJohn Wickfranchise. As evident, the stars are aligning for a Sofia spin-off to finally be produced, yet it seems increasingly unlikely this will happen. For many reasons, this would be a mistake and would hinder theJohn Wickfranchise’s forward progression beyond the titular Baba Yaga.
