Warning: Major spoilers for Reacher season 3 episode 1 “Persuader” below!Reacheris forced to play a game of Russian roulette as part of a twisted job interview, but here’s how he survived all four attempts. Season 3 adaptsLee Child’s seventhReachernovelPersuader, which also serves as the first episode’s title. This sees Reacher (Alan Ritchson) working alongside a team of DEA agents and he goes undercover with a suspected drug dealer, and the first episode details the elaborate lengths they go to staging a fake kidnapping. As part of their plan,Reacher has to fire a revolver loaded with both fakeandlive bullets.

The issue with the DEA’s plan was how quickly it was put together, so just like theLee ChildReacherbookit adapts, the avenging drifter will struggle to stay one step ahead of his new employer Beck’s (Anthony Michael Hall) suspicions. While Reacher may have “saved” his son from being kidnapped,Beck still forces Reacher to play Russian roulette before hiring him. The twisted logic behind this is to see if Reacher “has any guts;” not only does Reacher win the first attempt, but he then takes three more unnecessary turns to prove his fearlessness.

Reacher Season 3, Episodes 1-3 Review - I Can’t Get Over How Fantastic That Premiere Episode Twist Was

The first 3 episodes of Reacher season 3 prove that the celebrated Prime Video series has not lost its touch, starting with an amazing surprise twist.

Reacher’s forethought saved his life

To make the kidnapping look real, Reacher had to shoot some live rounds from his revolver. Since he also had to shoot two people using blanks, Reacher marked the cylinder of his magnum to always know where the blanks began. This is what saves his life during the Russian roulette scene, as he loads the bullet into the marked chamberbefore playing. This means through all of his spins, he always knew whether the chamber was loaded or not.

Not only does winning this game prove his “guts” to Beck, but it also shows he’s dangerous. Reacher later tells Beck’s surly head of security Duke (Donald Sales) that he wasn’t worried about dying anyway, claiming the bullet he was handed was a dud with no gunpowder;Duke then takes the revolver and shoots a can to prove to Reacher it was all real. Since viewers aren’t aware of Reacher’s plan before he plays Russian roulette, it still makes for a very intense scene.

Reacher always has a backup plan

While debriefing with Agent Duffy (Sonya Cassidy), Reacher walks her through how he beat Beck’s Russian roulette challenge. She rightfully points out a flaw with the plan: what if he had spun the cylinder onto the loaded chamber? Naturally, Reacher had already considered this.If it had come down to that, Reacher would have shot Duke with his single bullet and tried to fight his way outof the compound. That’s not a very elaborate or indepth plan, but it’s still better than blowing his own head off.

There’s also a slight possibility he believed the bullet he was given actually was a dud and didn’t think Beck was serious. He wasn’t about to bet his life on that chance, but Duke firing the live round removed all doubt. Thankfully,Reacher didn’t have to implement his plan b, where the mission would have failed before it even began.

Beck Letting Reacher Play Russian Roulette With His Own Gun Was A Huge Advantage

Luck played a part in Reacher’s survival

Reacher was incredibly lucky that Beck let him play Russian roulette with his own gun because things could have turned out much worse if he had been given a different revolver. With no marked chambers, Reacher would have had no way of knowing where the bullet wasand would have had to actually play the game. Thanks to the mark on his revolver’s cylinder, he could always track the bullet’s position and turn the odds in his favor.

Persuader(2003)

In hindsight, Beck’s bodyguard Paulie (Olivier Richters) probably devised this whole challenge. Paulie and Reacher got off to a bad start after the latter was forced to hand over his gun, so he probably saw some irony in making Reacher play Russian roulette with it.Paulie might tower over Reacher in size, but just like his counterpart inPersuader, he’s not as big in the brains department, which should build anticipation for the inevitableReacher vs Paulie fight.

It will be interesting to see if Reacher’s magnum comes back into play later in season 3, as he uses the weapon again during a key passage in Lee Child’s novel, Persuader.

Regardless,Reacherwinning Russian roulette proves his worth to Beck, allowing his undercover assignment to begin in earnest. It will be interesting to see ifReacher’smagnum comes back into play later in season 3, as he uses the weapon again during a key passage in Child’s novel. While his improvisation skills get him into Beck’s house, later episodes will prove that his infiltration plan wasn’t as airtight as he and the DEA initially thought. Needless to say, this results in a larger bodycount.
