How To Find Fuel
Scavenging Fuel from Cars
Traveling across Nalcott, players will noticeabandoned vehiclesalong the sides of the road. While not all vehicles are lootable, most can be opened to findPortable Mixed Fueland supplies. Pay attention while exploring, especially along dirt roads, and make sure to stop and collect fuel regularly.
Vehicles in Settlements and Hamlets arenever lootable, even if they look like ones you can loot along the road. When in doubt,use your Q snap, as those containing fuel will glow white.
As a general rule of thumb,cars with an in-tact trunk will contain fueland other items. Cars that appear burned, wrecked, or otherwise gutted cannot be looted. Occasionally, you may pass by apickup or military truckwith a crate inside, but this will contain standard supplies, not fuel.
Participating in Workshop Events
The next way to find fuel is to participate in the Workshop events, which yield Stardust Source, Cortexes, andBarreled Premium Fuel. These events require players to use anExtraction Permitto start the event using a tower defense mechanic.
Players will be given a set amount of time tobuild fortifications to protect the extractor. After this time, there will be several waves with different enemies and Elites whose level depends on the difficulty of the Extraction Permit used.
Players must eliminate all enemy waveswithout allowing them to damage the extractortoo much. After all waves are eliminated, players will be rewarded with prizes for that location.
How To Make Fuel
Refining Crude Oil and Fuel at Home
The easiest way to refine fuel is at home,using a Water Pump and Refining Facility. To extract crude oil from the ground, players mustbuild theirbase inOnce Humanon or near the oil veinsshown on the map. These locations are dark “rivers” shown on the map for Red Sands and Blackheart, and crude oil can sometimes be seen in puddles on the surface of the ground.
Once the player has placed their base nearby, they should set up a Water Pumpas close to the oil vein as possibleto test if they can reach the oil. After 5 minutes, the pump will either return Dirty Water, orBarreled Crude Oil. Once you’re hitting crude oil, you’re ready to start.
Refining Facility and Super Refinery
Once you’re receiving crude oil, it’s time toplace it into a Refining Facility. Placing Barreled Crude Oil into the facility yields Portable Mixed Fuel. Placing Portable Mixed Fuel into the facility again yields Barreled Premium Fuel. Unfortunately, this process takes an hour to complete, so more Refining Facilities will net you a faster yield.
Despite using a Water Pump to extract the crude oil, unfortunately,oil and fuel cannot be transported using pipeslike water. You’ll need to physically pick up the oil from water pumps and dispense it into the Refineries.
How To Use a Super Refinery
Faster Fuel Refining
If you’re lucky, you may end up unlocking theSuper Refineryperk under theMemetic Specializations. This Super Refinery halves the time needed to produce fuel and dramatically reduces the amount of Portable Mixed Fuel to create Barreled Premium Fuel. In the end game, this is extremely valuable due to how much Premium fuel is needed for ammunition and turrets. Additionally, Super Refineries have two slots for production, meaning you canrefine both crude oil and portable fuel at the same time.
In addition to crude oil, Super Refineries can alsoconvert Acid into Portable Mixed Fuel. Placing 10 Acid into the refinery yields 5 Portable Mixed Fuel. Because Acid is also needed for many other supplies, it is not recommended to use Acid unless you have apassive Acid farm.
In the early game, fuel is an important resource for exploration and questing inOnce Human, allowing you to use vehicles to travel long distances. In the late game, this fuel is even more important for traveling,crafting missile turrets, and fueling your portable territories(Pickup Truck and Flatbed Truck). Be sure to stay on top of scavenging fuel early on and use late-game oilfields to stay topped off.
