The recently-released full trailer for Robert Eggers’ upcoming remake of theiconic vampire movieNosferatuhas me even more excited about it than ever before.Nosferatuis just the fourth movie from Robert Eggers, but where he lacks in volume he more than makes up for in quality. Each of Eggers’ three previous movies have received universal acclaim from both critics and fans, and theNosferatutrailer indicates that streak isn’t about to end with the gothic horror story.

Hitting theaters on Christmas 2024,Nosferatuis poised to be a reimaginingof the original 1922 silent German Expressionist film from director F.W. Murnau. While most of the character names and major story beats will be carried over, Eggers’ adaptation will almost certainly expand upon the threat that the vicious and evil Count Orlok (Bill Skarsgård) poses to Western Europe. As a true Robert Eggers fanatic,Nosferatuhas been one of my most-anticipated films since its announcement. After seeingthe fullNosferatutrailer, I’m beyond ready to experience Eggers’ terrifying vision.

Nosferatu’s New Trailer Shows Why Robert Eggers Was Perfect For The Vampire Movie

Eggers Is A Modern Master Of Creating Dread

One of the defining traits ofNosferatuand of Count Orlok, the demonic vampire at its center, is the sheer dread they convey.Nosferatuleans heavily into the traditional European vampire’s gothic origins, weaponizing the dark against the audience as it hides danger and terror around every corner. Likewise,Count Orlok’s entire appearance is intended to be unsettling, from his pale countenance and hairless head to his disturbingly long fingers, which end in sharp nails meant to slash and draw blood.

Steadily-building dread is a hallmark of Robert Eggers’ work, and it’s what makes him the perfect fit forNosferatu. The dark has operated as his playground in the past, particularly in his psychological thrillerThe Lighthouseand his historical epic The Northman, both of which still dripped horror vibes at times. With a character as creepy as Count Orlok to build the narrative around, I have faith that Eggers will be able to extract every ounce of terror out of the source material. Add in his unwavering commitment to period details, andNosferatushould be a benchmark horror movie.

Nosferatu’s Official Trailer Makes The Movie Look Even More Exciting

It’s Clearly Elevating The Stakes And Scale Of The Original

The originalNosferatumovie followed the same overarching plot as Bram Stoker’sDracula, which it was based upon. The trailer for Eggers’Nosferatuindicates that the remake will elevate the stakes(vampire pun intended) and craft Orlok not just as a blood-sucking vampire out to feed on Thomas Hutter (Nicholas Hoult), his wife Ellen (Lily Rose-Depp), and the denizens of Wisborg, the town to which Orlok moves. The trailer, and specifically Willem Dafoe’s character, Professor Von Franz, imply that Orlok has much grander ambitions:

This creature is a force more powerful than evil…its desire is to consume all life on Earth.

The increasingly famous image from the trailer of Nosferatu’s clawed hand extending its shadow over the entire town (which is presumably Wisborg or a similar stand-in) is the perfect visual to describe Orlok’s level of growing influence. Other shots, including the teeming mass of rats and characters with bleeding eyes indicate that Eggers’ Count Orlok will have far more than blood-sucking powers at his disposal. The remake seems to be elevating the threat that Orlok poses to Western Europein general, making me even more excited to see the movie than when I thought it was simply a stylized remake.

I’m So Ready To See Nosferatu In December Now

It Could Be The Highest-Quality High-Profile Horror Movie Of The Year

One element that needs to be called out in regard to theNosferatufull trailer (and teaser trailer before it) is what it chooses not toreveal. I, like many movie fans, can’t stand when too much is revealed in a trailer, and it’s a trend that has invaded Hollywood trailers across all genres.TheNosferatutrailers have concealed perhaps the single most-anticipated elementof the entire movie: Bill Skarsgård’s Count Orlok. Given how incredible early reports of Skarsgård’s transformation are, it’s a genius way to maintain some mystique heading into the Christmas release date.

Bill Skarsgård’s Remake Of A 102-Year-Old Movie Now Has A Huge Challenge Thanks To Michael B. Jordan

Bill Skarsgård is set to star in Robert Eggers' upcoming remake of Nosferatu, but the movie’s success now stands a chance of being overshadowed.

As Lily Rose-Depp’s Ellen Hutter ends the trailer with,“I am ready.”I am ready to see a Robert Eggers interpretation of an iconic horror story with a mesmerizing gothic setting. I am ready to see modern scream king Bill Skarsgård transform into the title role and surpass his work as Pennywise the Clown. I am ready for Christmas to get here so I can experience the movie I’ve looked forward to sinceNosferatuwas first announced. I am ready.
