Grand Admiral Thrawn was initially introduced in Timothy Zahn’sHeir to the Empirebook trilogy in the 1990s, and the novels had a significant impact on fans of the franchise. However, becauseHeir to the Empireis a part of theStar WarsExpanded Universe(also called Legends) it was no longer considered canon after Disney bought Lucasfilm in 2012.
Since then, Dave Filoni has been slowly re-canonizing aspects of Legends including reintroducing Thrawn inStar Wars Rebelsseason 3. I believe Thrawn’s introduction inRebelsis one of the reasons why the show is so beloved by fans. Thrawn was calculating, but calm under pressure, and it seemed like the rebels didn’t stand a chance, making for some must-seeStar Warscontent. When it was announced that Thrawn would make his live-action debut inAhsoka, it opened all the possibilities of where else this iconic character could appear — and I might have figured out when we’ll see him next.

In the episode, the Empire’s forces to catch Mon Mothma were led by Thrawn, and he had even planned a sneak attack to catch the rebels as they exited a Nebula.In fact, it was Thrawn’s idea to let the rebels escape and be chased into the Nebula so that his star destroyer, the Chimerawould be waiting for them on the other side.

Mon Mothma would go on to lead the Rebel Alliance from Yavin 4, but her escape from Thrawn and his forces was seen as a failure for the Grand Admiral.

When Mon Mothma defected from the Empire it was after giving a speech blaming Emperor Palpatine for killing innocent protesters on the planet Ghorman. The speech was moving and was why the Empire wanted to capture the senator. It seems thatAndorseason 2will be showing more of Mon Mothma, and even show her defection and subsequent escape from Imperial custody. Based on set photos, it’s been theorized that Cassian Andor will be the rebel operative sent to extract Mon Mothma from Coruscant.

While it makes sense to bring together two of the main characters inAndorin Cassian and Mon Mothma, it’ll be interesting how else Mothma’s story is integrated intoRebels.Because ofAndor’s unique storytelling model where one story arc is told over three episodes, viewers can expect to see Mothma’s defection over multiple weeks. The first episode of the arc may focus on the Ghorman massacre and Mon Mothma’s decision to speak out, whereas the second will be her defection and the first part of her escape, and the third may retell the story fromRebels.

Since before its premiere,Andorhas been marketed as a “boots-on-the-ground” type of show that largely stays away from the fantastical nature of the Jedi, instead showing normal people’s struggles against the Empire.It’s already been confirmed thatAndorseason 2 will feature cameosfrom different characters fromRogue One: A Star Wars Storyincluding Ben Mendelsohn as Director Krennic, Alan Tudyk as K2-SO, and Forrest Whitaker returning as Saw Gerrera. However, bringing in someone so important to the New Republic Era in Lars Mikkelsen’s Grand Admiral Thrawn seems like overkill.

One of the best things aboutAndoris that it’s stuck to its guns when it comes to telling a compelling story that is gritty and grounded in real hardship but changing to shoehorn in someone like Grand Admiral Thrawn seems disingenuous.I’d be okay if Lars Mikkelsen made a vocal cameo indicating that Thrawn was going to intercept Mon Mothma, but anything more than that threatens to take away from the overall story being told. I hope that Tony Gilroy continues his amazing track record fromAndorseason 1 and only further enriches Mon Mothma’s defection inAndorseason 2.
Cassian Andor
Drawn into the nascent Rebel Alliance despite himself, Cassian Andor became one of the most dangerous “Fulcrum” spies for the rebellion. His life was unknowingly lived in the shadow of the Death Star, and Cassian was the agent who eventually discovered the battle-station’s existence. Cassian allied with Jyn Erso as part of the doomed (but successful) mission to Scarif, helping recover the Death Star plans.
Grand Admiral Thrawn
The only alien to ever ascend to the rank of Grand Admiral, Thrawn is a strategic genius who hails from an isolationist race known as the Chiss. Thrawn’s motives are enigmatic, but his tactical brilliance made him a vital asset for the Empire. Jedi Padawan Ezra Bridger successfully defeated Thrawn during the Battle of Lothal, resulting in Thrawn’s exile to the distant planet Peridea in another galaxy, but the Grand Admiral has now returned.
