I’ve gotten a lot of joy out of running around central Japan inAssassin’s Creed Shadows, but it has its fair share of frustrations. Exploration in an open-world Ubisoft game is never quite on the level ofBreath of the WildorElden Ring, and it’s no surprise thatShadowsoften fails to rewardthe act of traveling off the beaten path. While the sightseeing is gorgeous enough for me to forgive that, I occasionally found myself disappointed by the monotony of clambering up brush-laden hillsides as I tracked down a new objective.

On some level, I applaudAssassin’s Creed Shadows' willingness to present a version of feudal Japan that’s more interested in conveying what its natural environments would look and feel like than it is in constant entertainment. The settings are the number-one reason I playAssassin’s Creed, after all, and there’s a certain sense of relaxation to find in patiently trotting a horse down a long riverside path. Long, empty journeys don’t have to be mindless, though, and picking upDeath Strandingfor a replay after I finishedShadowsreminded me just how much more you can do.

Death Stranding’s Focus On Traversal Is Special

To address the elephant in the room,in no world do I expectAssassin’s Creedto feature the robust traversal mechanics ofDeath Stranding. Running from point A to point B is entirely the point ofDeath Strandingand, aside from parkour, barely more than a side effect of theAssassin’s Creedgameplay loop. It makes sense thatShadowsdoesn’t place the same emphasis on how you interact with its terrain, and the ability to find some natural footholds in rock formations is already more than what many other games offer.

At the same time, picking upDeath Strandingagain has made me wish that games likeShadowstook at least a little inspiration from its ideas.Death Stranding’s challenges focus on the difficulty of balancing heavy loads in uneven terrain, which can make every river, incline, and crevasse into a major threat. A continually expanding array of equipment aids in this effort, from simple tools like climbing pitons and ladders to sci-fi inclusions like exoskeletons and floating cargo platforms.

Even if you take away the packages that protagonist Sam Porter Bridges carries, you still have strong mechanical interactions with the terrain he crosses, which is whereAssassin’s Creed Shadowsfeels a bit lacking.Assassin’s Creed’s first attempt at buffing up exploration outside of cities inAssassin’s Creed 3allowed Connor to parkour between rocks and treesin a way that’s largely fallen out of the games since. I can appreciate the difficulty of making parkour mechanics fully interact with natural terrain, but I would like to see a little more.

ToShadows' credit, seasons have major impacts on the environment and stealth, which is both impressive and unique.

Open-world games almost always struggle with slopes, andAssassin’s Creed Shadowsis no exception. Off-road paths frequently result in hitting steep angles that Naoe can’t quite handle, pushing her to zigzag along mountain ridges to find manageable routes. UnlikeDeath Stranding,it feels less like you’re searching naturally for an efficient route and more like you’re testing what the game feels like allowingat any given moment. Aside from the beautiful vistas, climbing a mountain can be less of an achievement and more of a waste of time.

Uphill,I’d like to see movement options that address this no-go zone between a manageable slope and a scaleable vertical wall.Naoe’s grappling hookis the most obvious equipment opportunity. Even if it wasn’t particularly faster than finding a different route, I’d get more enjoyment out ofgrappling sturdy trees to use the hook in a vaguely similar manner to a piton.

Assassin’s Creed Shadows patch 1.0.2 has a ton of bug fixes and improvements, and horse auto-follow has made its inevitable and much-needed comeback.

Downhill, I do appreciate that Naoe and Yasuke can end up sliding a bit down steep slopes. It doesn’t open up the opportunities that something likeBreath of the Wild’s shield surfing does, though, andI’d be interested in seeing a take on momentum that’s a bit more likeDeath Stranding’s. Running downhill, Sam can easily pick up too much speed and end up staggering or even faceplanting as the ground levels out. It’s a pain I know all too well, having torn plenty of skin off my knee by making a similar mistake as a kid.

While I can’t see Naoe falling victim to this misappropriation of momentum, it’s one example of how you could makeYasuke’s exploration tradeoffsmore interesting without him needing to always be so slow.Falling over after charging down an overly steep slope could let Yasuke pick up intense speed while maintaining his occasional clumsiness. Considering the game’s penchant for environmental destruction, it could also have some fun results in the right locations.

At the end of the day, my complaint isn’t so much withAssassin’s Creed Shadowsin particular as it is with thelitany of games where the environment occasionally collapses into being a relatively lazy obstacle. There’s a reason why Todd Howard’s “you can walk all the way to the top of that mountain” (commonly misquoted as “See that mountain? You can climb it.") became such an iconic reference toSkyrim.

Elden Ring’s Best Open-World Trick That Most Players Missed

Elden Ring does a lot to make its open world interesting to explore, but its most important facet often gets overlooked because it’s so obvious.

Scaling a mountain is a fundamentally compelling prospect, and whenever that gets reduced to shuffling along until you reach the 5% decrease in slope intensity that lets you move on, it’s a little disappointing.Sometimes the best solution is to make everything easy to climb, and sometimes dialing up the challenge to turn a minor obstacle into a true puzzle is more interesting.Death Strandingis all-in on the latter, but its complex suite of features hasn’t had much of an impact on other AAA games.

The silly shuffle of climbing a mountain inAssassin’s Creed Shadowsis a fairly minor gripe, and it’s not even particularly inaccurate to how slopes work in real life. Over the course of 50 or 60 hours, though, I grew increasingly fatigued by how fundamentally unexciting that aspect of the game was.Death Strandingmight not be the easiest place to look for a simple fix, but it does provide a particularly staggering contrast when played back-to-back withAssassin’s Creed Shadows, and I’m certainly happy to look at rough terrain with a sense of excitement again.
