Summary
I’m loving Apple TV+‘sBad Monkey, but I’m a little annoyed at myself for not seeing the third episode’s big twist coming from a mile away. Theend ofBad Monkeyseason 1, episode 3, “Nobody Said He Was Alvin Einstein,” took me off-guard, as I’m assuming was the intention. However, in retrospect, all the signs were there for me to work it out for myself ahead of time, and yet I didn’t. Regardless, it’s a brilliant reveal.
Vince Vaughn does a brilliant jobof leading theBad Monkeycast, and it’s really fun to see him playing a different kind of role compared to his more traditional characters. He’s long been one of my favorite comic actors, and while he certainly gets chances to be funny inBad Monkey, his dramatic moments also have room to breathe. As Andrew Yancy, his relentless pursuit of a case he isn’t even assigned to is at the heart of the story, and episode 3 brings with it a huge and frustrating revelation.

Since the beginning, the Apple TV+ adaptation of Carl Hiaasen’s 2013 novel has made no secret ofRob Delaney’sBad Monkeycharacterbeing the main antagonist. That being said,the show has cleverly hidden the fact that Christopher has been Caitlin’s dad all along. Of course, the biggest clueBad Monkeycould have provided before the ending of “Nobody Said He Was Alvin Einstein” would have been to show Christopher is missing an arm, but that would have been a little on-the-nose given the case’s primary piece of evidence.

I also felt that Christopher was on the very edges of the story, despite the fact he’s also being pushed as a major villain. When Caitlin is reunited with the character who turns out to be her father - a man who was thought to be dead - those vague feelings I had about there being something off about Christopher all started to make sense. I could say it was obvious, but then surely I’d have worked it out ahead of time.
Caitlin is played by Charlotte Lawrence, daughter of theBad Monkeyshowrunner and the man behind other shows likeTed LassoandScrubs.
Christopher being unveiled as Catilin’s dad comes less than a third of the way throughBad Monkey’s run. The adaptation will eventually add up to a 10-episode season. The Christopher reveal may seem like a big moment, but considering there are still seven full episodes to come after this twist, I’m certain that even more dramatic revelations will occur before the story ends. If not, the rest ofBad Monkeywould likely be a very dull ride.
