As you explore the Vatican inIndiana Jones and the Great Circle, you’re likely to come upon a combination safe you may not be able to open. The safe is located just off the first main area you’re permitted to exploreonce you enter the Vatican proper, not too far from Antonio’s office. Finding it begins a quest called “Secret of Secrets,” which charges you with discovering the combination and opening it to find a rare medieval document referred to as the “Secretum Secretorum.”
Many similar games include a plethora of side quests that are, on the surface, similar to this one. They’re self-contained within a single room, they require the player to find a single piece (or single cache) of treasure, and they’re quitesimple on any difficulty level. But this isIndiana Jones, and things are a little different. Yes, this side quest (or Optional Mystery, in the game’s parlance) is self-contained, and ostensibly revolves around a single piece of treasure. But it’s anything but easy. Here’s how to open the chest in the Vatican inIndiana Jones and the Great Circle.

How To Find The “Secret Of Secrets” Safe
Finding The Clerical Key & The Sistine Chapel Safe
You can find the Sistine Chapel safe shortly after arriving in the Vatican and meeting with Father Antonio. As soon as you unlock the ability to roam freely, you may notice thatcertain doors in the Chapel are locked, and require the Clerical Key. In order to get this, you’ll have to complete the next couple of steps in “The Stolen Cat Mummy.”
Indiana Jones And The Great Circle Review: Already A Priceless Artifact
Indiana Jones and the Great Circle valiantly attempts to recapture what makes the movies special, and like Indy himself, it usually lands on its feet.
Enter the closed room past the maintenance worker, anduse the Giant’s medallion on the indentation in the wall to unlock a secret passage. Follow it to the end, swimming underwater to get behind the closed gate, and listen to Antonio’s dialogue once you let him in. Before you go, don’t forget tograb the Ancient Reliclying on the table near the gate.

Antonio has some other business to attend to, so he gives you his Clerical Key so you can get around the Sistine Chapel unhindered.Return to the library and open the back door with stained-glass windows to find the lone safe, sitting on a table next to a statue of a saint (whom we’ll become acquainted with in just a minute). to start the quest proper, though, you’ll need to pick up Nicoletti’s Letter from the desk behind it.
Solving The Sistine Chapel Safe Puzzle
Understanding Nicoletti’s Letter & The Saint Statues
You can pick up Nicoletti’s letter to get a little more detail on what’s in the safe, but more importantly, you’ll want to pay special attention to the last paragraph before his signature. “If you’ve forgotten the combination again, look to the stars and the saints: Peter with the key, then Paul with the sword.” This, of course, sounds very arcane and spiritual, but it has a relatively simple meaning:closely examining the two statues of saints in this room in the correct order will reveal the combination.
First, of course, we must look to Peter. The statue in the far corner of the room depicts Saint Peter; if you don’t recognize him by appearance alone, the key in his hand should give it away. (Also, if you pick him up, the screen will display the caption “Saint Peter.” Using either the right stick or the WASD keys, turn the statue over in Indy’s hands until you can see the bottom. There, you’ll see a pair of symbols painted in white: circles with arrows extending from them. In archaic astronomy, this symbol stood for the planet Mars - remember that.

Indiana Jones & The Great Circle: How To Upgrade Health & Stamina
In order to upgrade health & stamina in Indiana Jones & The Great Circle, players will have to find medicine bottles or spend money in Vatican City.
Now, return to the table with the safe on it to find Paul, holding his sword as promised. Pick him up and flip him over, andyou’ll see two new symbols: one identical to the Mars symbol on Peter’s base, but with a dot in the middle, and one that looks like a cross extending from a circle, with an additional arc drawn on top of it to give it the appearance of horns. The first is one of two symbols used for Uranus, and the latter is the symbol for Mercury.

Decoding The Planetary Chart To Find The Sistine Safe Code
If you know your planets well, you’ve probably already guessed the solution to this puzzle. In case you don’t, return to the desk where you found Nicoletti’s note, and open the drawer to find a Planetary Chart. This contains several of the symbols we’ve already seen elsewhere in the room, soby matching them with the symbols painted on the statues, we can determine the combination.
This chart is said to contain all the planets “except for Pluto,” which was still considered a planet in 1937.

There’s just one problem:the symbol aligned with number four is missingfrom the chart. But using our powers of deduction (considering it doesn’t appear anywhere else on the chart) and foreknowledge of the order of the planets (Mars is the fourth planet from the sun), we can determine that the Mars symbol represents 4 in the combination. So, taking the numbers from the base of Saint Peter and Saint Paul and converting them using this chart, we knowthe Sistine Chapel safe combination is 4471.
Enter that combo on the safe’s spinning wheels, and it’ll indeed crack open. Unfortunately, Indy immediately realizes that the document he was promised is a forgery. Thankfully, though, the safe also contains a skill book, Cutman I, which allows Indy to level up his HP regeneration for 250 Action Points. That does make it a fairly valuable mystery to solve inIndiana Jones and the Great Circle.
