Warning: Contains SPOILERS for Mothra: Queen of the Monsters #2!Mothra has long-been a mainstay inGodzillacontinuity, as she’s not only appeared in some ofthe earliest Toho filmsas well as some of themost recent MonsterVerse movies, but she regularly plays an integral role in whatever story she’s in. And the same is true of her latest appearance, where Mothra not only makes the ultimate sacrifice in an effort to save the world, but is then brought back to life as a baby.
In the solicitation forMothra: Queen of the Monsters#2 by Sophie Campbell and Matt Frank, the fate of this fan-favorite kaiju is revealed. Mothra is dead, and has been for many years after failing to defeat a horrific new monster that will be introduced in this storyline. After Mothra’s death, this villainous new monster in question ushered in an age of rampaging monsters, which brought about the end of the world. Indeed, the world needs Mothra, so two twin sisters come up with a plan to bring her back as a baby: time travel.

Mothra! The Queen of the Monsters! Rival to Godzilla! Protector of Earth! Dead!
Wait… dead? That’s right! The Queen of the Monsters is currently no more… that is, at least not in this time period! But with the power of the Shobijin, our recently reunited twins can travel back in time to the Jurassic Period and find a baby Mothra they can raise to save the day!

It’s a simple plan, really. The twins use the mystical power of the Shobijin to bend the fabric of space and time, transporting them back to the Jurassic age. Why would they go back so far into the past? Well, that was the only way to get their hands on a baby Mothra and raise her to be a savior of humanity. Only Mothra can undo the horrors of what has become of the world, and even though she’s been dead for years, Mothra has another shot at saving the planet, as she’s effectively being brought back to life as a baby.
Why Mothra Needs to Be Brought Back to Life in the First Place
Antra is a New Kaiju in Godzilla Continuity, & Potentially the Deadliest One
The first thought that likely ran through fans’ minds upon hearing that Mothra is being brought back to life as a baby is this: how did she die in the first place? Mothra is a kaiju who hasappeared alongside Godzilla for decades, and has even saved the King of the Monsters’ neck on more than one occasion. So, who could have killed such an A-list monster to the point where time travel needed to be implemented to bring her back? Short answer: Antra.
Antra is the monster who killed Mothra before bringing about the end of the world. Antra is a giant ant-like monster who only wants to cause as much chaos and destruction as possible, which is why Mothra - a proven champion of humanity - rose to the occasion to stop her. Unfortunately, Antra was simply too much for Mothra (as fans will read inMothra: Queen of the Monsters#1), resulting in Mothra’s death. Luckily, that death won’t last very long, as Mothra is coming back as a baby to challenge this vile new villain to an epic rematch.

Will Baby Mothra Have What It Takes to Defeat Antra?
Antra Killed Mothra Before, & Sadly Might Do So Again
While bringing Mothra back as a baby is enough to give humanity hope that Antra can be defeated and the world can be saved, that’s not a guarantee. Antra killed a full-grown Mothra who had already lived through numerous kaiju battles, meaning a baby Mothra - even after reaching maturity - might not have what it takes to succeed where the original Mothra failed. Only time will tell if the heroic kaiju will come out on top, but until then, all readers (and in-world characters alike) can do is hope.
Following a Historic Oscars Win, Godzilla Is Ready to Expand Its Universe In a Big Way
2025 is going to be a massive year for Godzilla’s comic book fans, with the kaiju - and his friends - starring in new series from IDW and Marvel.
Even though it’s not guaranteed that the new baby Mothra will have what it takes to beat Antra, the journey to that epic rematch is one that fans will not want to miss. Plus, kaiju-violence aside, this storyline is about to give fans a look at Mothra as a baby, effectively turning one of the most badassGodzillamonsters into one of the cutest.
