Summary

Modern Family’s Julie Bowen addresses her alleged set feud with Sofía Vergara. Bowen and Vergara played Claire and Gloria, respectively, on the hit ABC sitcom. During its run, the show was nominated for copious Emmys, including nominations for both actors for their supporting roles. The series ran for eleven seasons from 2009 to 2020, and there have since been talks of aModern Familyreboot.

Speaking on theI Choose Mepodcast, Bowen speaks about her supposed feud with Vergara. According to Bowen, this feud was entirely made up by the press, who “were just determined to pit [them] against each other.” Vergara once suggested that Bowen wear one of her blouses in public to help prove that the pair were on good terms. In stark contrast to the long-held rumors, Bowen went on to praise Vergara, calling her “funny and self-effacing and bawdy” and mentioning that she “learned so much from being around her.” Check out the full quote from Bowen below:

They were just determined to pit us against each other, like we hated each other. It’s this scarcity mindset that there’s only one woman who can be happy at a time.

Every night I get a call or email that says, ‘So-and-so trash mag will be running a story that you are icy to Sofía Vergara because you are jealous of her fame. So I email her last night and then we talk and I’m like, ‘What should I say?’ because we’re friends ‘Just borrow my blouse!’ [Vergara said].

I love Sofía, and I love how different we are, and I love that she is funny and self-effacing and bawdy, and she loves life and she loves dancing and eating cake, and all of these things.

I learned so much from being around her about what it is to be a really powerful, completely in herself woman. No one would mistake her for like a fourteen-year-old boy from behind like they do me all the time.

The Modern Family Cast Has Stayed Close

Bowen’s quote makes it abundantly clear thatthe feud couldn’t be further from the truth. Their characters experience some friction early on in the series because Gloria is Claire’s stepmother on the show, and the second wife to Claire’s father, Jay Pritchett. However, Gloria is younger than Claire, causing some awkwardness. Whether it be the notion that “there’s only one woman who can be happy at a time,” or not, the feud rumors could have originated from falsifying life to mimic their fictional counterparts.
