Withers, on the other hand, worked to get Miller’s photos out to the world via Vogue, despite the magazine’s focus on fashion. “Davey saw that she was brilliant, and saw her work, and they became a team.”

When talking about Miller’s relationships, her friendship with Scherman is one of the most important and one that Samberg says came easily between the pair.“They’re both from New York. They’re both doing the same thing,“Samberg says,“Right out of the gate, even though a lot of people are slamming doors on Lee, Davey saw that she was brilliant, and saw her work, and they became a team.“That teamwork and bonding came with a lot of challenges, though.

Andy Samberg: I think so much of what really bonded them, sadly, was going through those horrible things. Everyone has their own version of that, where you go through traumatic stuff with someone, and no matter what happens after that, you always experience those things together and that never really goes away. So seeing them together during those moments, I do think was pretty fascinating to observe.

Riseborough’s Withers may not have been on the frontlines, but she was just as integral to Miller’s time as a photographer during the war.

When you look into the way that she grew up and everything she wrote and her involvement with art and design, she was a really, really extraordinary character. But I think the most interesting thing about her, for me, was that she was bit of a socialist in quite a conservative fashion world, yet she managed to really have great relationships with absolutely everybody across the pond.

She may have been the"most unlikely candidate, really to be the editor of British Vogue during the Second World War,“Riseborough says,“But she did it because she was so can-do and austere, really, in the most lovable way.”

Kate Winslet Gives A Powerhouse Performance In New War Biopic

Lee, the directorial feature from award-winning Cinematographer Ellen Kuras, portrays a pivotal decade in the life of American war correspondent and photographer, Lee Miller (Kate Winslet). Miller’s singular talent and unbridled tenacity resulted in some of the 20th century’s most indelible images of war, including an iconic photo of Miller herself, posing defiantly in Hitler’s private bathtub.

Miller had a profound understanding and empathy for women and the voiceless victims of war. Her images display both the fragility and ferocity of the human experience. Above all, the film shows how Miller lived her life at full-throttle in pursuit of truth, for which she paid a huge personal price, forcing her to confront a traumatic and deeply buried secret from her childhood.
