Producers were probably trying to set Dave up to be the villain in the pod episodes because of his commentary regarding women’s looks, women over 30, and asking women what was wrong with them. Meanwhile, he nearly had a panic attack when Lauren and Molly started putting pressure on him to make a decision. Once he reached the real world, Dave realized he wasn’t ready to go through with this experiment, and he made a mistake in choosing the earnest, patient, and kind Lauren.
David is using Lauren’s past dating experiences as a scapegoat for leaving their relationship.
The real problem for Dave is his sister. He made it very clear to Lauren that he held her opinion in the highest esteem, unsurprising for stereotypically close-knit Minnesotan families. It’s clear based on Dave and Lauren’s conversations that Dave’s sister doesn’t approve of the experiment and wants him to back out. By using Lauren’s casual dating life as an excuse, he could avoid being the bad guy.

Davehad a lot of red flags in the pods, and even though the relationship drama coming from Lauren was unexpected, the troubled road for the pair could have been predicted. His opening line with most of the women in the pods was, “so, what’s wrong with you?” Dave should have, perhaps, been asking himself the same question. However, it didn’t end there. Dave openly emphasized appearance, saying that being around Botox and filler had influenced what he believed a woman should look like. He also told Lauren she was “no longer attractive” because she had turned thirty.
While Dave’s behavior in the pods could be considered joking, he also put Lauren in a box. He assumed before she revealed more about her personality that she was a nurturing goody-two-shoes simply because she was a teacher. That’s probably part of the problem:Dave couldn’t believe that Lauren could be someone who casually hooked up with peoplebefore appearing on the show.

Dave is not likely to get over Lauren’s casual hook up, but she seemed to genuinely tell the truth about what was really going on.
