Most of the latest story arc of Eiichiro Oda’s epic has revolved around Luffy and his Straw Hat crew encountering the world’s smartest man, Dr. Vegapunk, on his futuristic island, along with surprising appearances from the Marines and the World Government’s Five Elders. While much of the events on Egghead Island were enough to keep the reader’s attention, the arc also featured shocking battles from other parts of the world.
Besides career-ending battles with Eustass Kid and Trafalgar Law, the Egghead arc also showed Koby being trapped on Blackbeard’s base of operations, Hachinosu (aka Beehive Island). The anime recently adapted the beginning of his rescue withOne Piece’s strongest attack from Garp’s nuclear-levelstrength, decimating the island. After his rescue and hearing about the events unfolding with Luffy on Egghead Island,Koby has declared in chapter #1122 that he is going to stop Luffyfrom becoming the King of the Pirates.

Dr.Vegapunk’s prerecorded message had been sent to every Transponder Snail in the world, revealing that the One Piece is real and that the world’s future may very well depend on who finds it first. For some, the announcement reignited the passion of many across the seas to hunt down the fabled treasure, but it also inspired others to pursue their own sense of justice further. For Koby, it finally pushed him to realize that he needs to test his newly found resolve by stopping Luffy’s dream of finding the One Piece from being realized.
Before escaping the headquarters of the Blackbeard Pirates, Koby demonstrated to the Marines and readers that he was far from the cowardly boy first introduced inOne Piecechapter #2. With his mentor Garp working to hold over some ofBlackbeard’s most powerful Captains, it was up to Koby and his fellow SWORD members to ensure their escape. He did just that after obliterating a massive section of the island with a single punch, a featthat easily makes Koby one of the strongest Marinesin the series.
Despite growing incredibly strong bonds with each member of the Straw Hat Crew, Luffy has technically known Koby for longer than any one of them, including Zoro and Nami.
Luffy and Koby have both leveled up considerably since they first met in the East Blue and after hearing about the events on Egghead and Dr.Vegapunk’s message, the up-and-coming Marine is ready to meet the Straw Hat Captain again. Without Luffy, Koby’s life would have been significantly different, so the thought that he feels confident enough to try to put a stop to such a figure’s dreams speaks volumes about how far the pink-haired Marine has come.
