What Happened In Mobile Suit Gundam GQuuuuuuX Episode 1?
Produced By Sunrise And Studio Khara; Directed By Kazuya Tsurumaki
Mobile Suit Gundam GQuuuuuuXepisode #1, “The Red Gundam”, takes place five years after an alternate version of the One Year War where Zeon emerged victorious, albeit without completely destroying the Federation. Challia Bull, once Char Aznable’s most loyal confidant, has spent the past five years looking for Char following his disappearance; his latest lead involves the mysterious reappearance of the Red Gundam, the form the Gundam took after Char stole it, and after tracking it down to the colony Side 6,Challia Bull sent ensign Xavier Olivette to apprehend the Red Gundam with Zeon’s new Gundam, Gundam GQuuuuuuX.
Meanwhile, on Side 6, ordinary high school student Amate “Machu” Yuzuriha had a run-in with a young courier named Nyaan that led to them accidentally switching bags. Machu forced Nyaan to take her to her clients, a struggling Clan Battle team in a Spacenoid refugee neighborhood, and just then, Xavier’s fight with the Red Gundam ended up in the colony right by them. Soon enough, the military police arrived, and even though both parties had already left, the military police started destroying the neighborhood to look for the Red Gundam as an excuse to mess with the Spacenoids.

Machu, disgusted with the military police, tried to take the Clan Battle team’s Mobile Suit to fight them, but her inability to operate it caused her to end up underground with Xavier and the GQuuuuuuX. Machu then stole the GQuuuuuuX to continue the fight, although her inexperience didn’t make things any easier, but just as things were looking dire,Machu’s latent Newtype powers triggered the Gundam GQuuuuuuX’s Omega Psycommu control unit to give Machu even better control over it than Xavier Olivette that allowed her to defeat the Federation pilots, and the episode ended with her victory.\
Mobile Suit Gundam GQuuuuuuX Created The Perfect Hero To Follow The Witch From Mercury
What Makes Machu Such A Great Protagonist
Mobile Suit Gundam GQuuuuuuXis already a standout anime, and a big part of that comes from its protagonist, Machu. Right from the gate, Machu is painted as an eccentric and outgoing protagonist through how much she wants to be free to do what she wants, and that culminated in her barely hesitating to pilot the GQuuuuuuX when she saw the blatant abuse of power from the Federation.Machu is a greatGundamprotagonist because of how outgoing and wily she’s been made out to be, and it will be great to see more of her later down the line.
What makes Machu even better is how she contrasts withThe Witch from Mercury’s Suletta Mercury. Suletta was always characterized by her shy and awkward personality, something she never fully grew out of by the finale, and as fun a character as she was, it would have been a mistake for the next series to go with that same archetype if it wanted to stand out.Machu’s assertive personality works so well, thanks in large part to her being the exact opposite of Suletta, and it works to makeGQuuuuuuXa great contrast toThe Witch from Mercury.

That contrast is sold even further by Machu’s dynamic with Nyaan. With Nyaan being a shy and reserved person, Machu is the one who always takes the initiative while Nyaan is mostly relegated to the sidelines, and Machu and Nyaan’s dynamic can even be seen as an inversion of Suletta and Miorine’s.Machu’s interactions with others further cement howMobile Suit Gundam GQuuuuuuXis positioned as a direct contrast toMobile Suit Gundam: The Witch from Mercury, and that’s going to give fans and detractors ofThe Witch from Mercuryalike plenty of reason to love it.
Mobile Suit Gundam GQuuuuuuX Is Already Anime Of The Year Material
GQuuuuuuX Is Easily One Of The Best Anime To Watch Right Now
There’s only one episode ofMobile Suit Gundam GQuuuuuuXout right now, and it’s already anime of the year material. Between the engaging characters and story, and the stellar art and animation, the latter of which has surprisingly good 3D visuals,Mobile Suit Gundam GQuuuuuuXis off to a great start both visually and narratively and is more than living up to the hype surrounding it.GQuuuuuuXis one of themost hotly-anticipated anime of 2025, and it will be great to watch it play out for the rest of the season.
The one odd point of the premiere, however, was the point in the series it chose to start with.Mobile Suit Gundam GQuuuuuuX’stheatrical previewopened with a lengthy prologue about Char stealing the Gundam, but the actual anime starts with the new timeline, meaning thatMobile Suit Gundam GQuuuuuuXis deliberately presenting its story in a way that makes it harder for newcomers to understand what’s going on. Those events are set to be covered in episode #2, but it’s still a weird decision, and hopefully,Mobile Suit Gundam GQuuuuuuXwon’t do anything like that again for its run.

Be sure to watchMobile Suit Gundam GQuuuuuuXepisode #2 when it releases on Tuesday, April 15.
