The first two issues ofSavage Wolverineperfectly demonstrate the horror and action chops of its creators. Arriving in the near-ghost town of Tropica, Logan finds many of its residents possessed by “The Beacon,” an entity that twists the townsfolk’s bodies into abominations with protruding bones or lumps of flesh. While the townsfolk have some level of autonomy, at least enough toinsult Logan for being a mutant, they’re less than human now.

Marvel Unlimited has pioneered Marvel’s use of the Infinity Comic where, instead of classic comics pages, panels are linked vertically in an infinite scroll.X-Menhas been one of the most successful franchises for the Marvel Unlimited model so far, with books likeX-Men Unlimited: Infinity ComicandX-Men: Greengiving new angles on the franchise. The format gives room for both books featuring major characters, like Wolverine, as well as books exploring lesser-known characters and smaller-scale dramas. It’s also the perfect format for creators known primarily for webcomics, likeSavage Wolverinewriter Tom Bloom.

This book specifically sets itself in the aftermath of the X-Men’s Krakoan Age, with mutants scattered after thefall of the nation of Krakoa. Logan, specifically, is in an interesting place.InX-Men (2024), Wolverine is reluctant to join a new team, declaring the concept of continuing the X-Men’s legacy moot; however, he’s also a member of the newUncanny X-Men (2024)team, putting aside his cynicism to help his friends. WhereSavage Wolverinefalls in this timeline is unclear, but it’s the perfect status quo for the loner readers see in the first two issues.

Savage WolverineHas Ties to Real Life Issues

One of the smartest things that the initial issues ofSavage Wolverinedo is tie its horror into the mundane. The townsfolk of Tropica are all taken over by the Beacon via a local radio show broadcasting Marvel Universe-specific conspiracy theories on the airwaves. The obvious metaphor here is how local media in real life can have a radicalizing impact on listeners, spreading much more serious conspiracies. In this way,Savage Wolverinehas more than one type of horror, andWolverinewill be fighting more than just a physical threat.

Wolverine

The human mutant Wolverine (a.k.a. Logan) was born James Howlett, blessed with a superhuman healing factor, senses, and physiology. Subjecting himself to experimentation to augment his skeleton and claws with adamantium, Logan is as deadly as he is reckless, impulsive, and short-tempered. Making him the X-Men’s wildest and deadliest member, and one of Marvel Comics' biggest stars. He’s played in Fox and Marvel’s movie franchises by Hugh Jackman.
