Is Warner Bros. Considering Selling Its Games Development Unit?

It’s Possible But Not Likely

Warner Bros. has been considering selling the company’s video game development unit since at least 2020. Back then, talks were in the works to sell to AT&T for $4 billion, but the company decided that it would be more valuable to keep the company. It seems that Zaslav still sees it more beneficial to keep game development within reach. With many successful titles under its belt, Warner Bros. may be more willing to collaborate than sell at this point, but a sale isn’t completely out of the question, especially if any upcoming video games don’t succeed.

Warner Bros. has several recent successes to consider. The company’s latest game,Harry Potter: Quidditch Championsis a day-one PS Plus release, which should lead to high player numbers on release. PreviousBatmangames, like theBatman: Arkhamfranchise, are beloved by the community. On the other hand, the company may be nervous about movie tie-ins due to thelackluster reception ofSuicide Squad: Kill the Justice League.

If a newBatmangame is really in development, fans can only hope that the company learned from the past. The upcoming Meta Quest VR gameBatman: Arkham Shadowalso shows that the company is at least willing to take risks. And that’s good news for the game section of the company: Any game would have to bring something new to the table and not be a simple rehash ofThe Batmanmovie or HBO’sThe Penguintie-in. A collaboration with a well-known studio is also likely, though the rights would probably go to Rocksteady Studios due to their excellent history with the game (Suicide Squadgame notwithstanding).
