A key location inStar Wars: Episode II – Attack of the Clonesmade its debut two years before the movie in aStar WarsLegendsproperty. AfterZam Wesell’s death, Obi-Wan Kenobi visited Dexter Jettster, an old friend of his who helped him trace Wesell’s murder weapon – aKaminosaberdart – back toJango Fett. Dex’s Diner is one of the most unique locales in theStar Warsfilms, taking inspiration from classic 1950s and 60s style diners and perhaps reminding viewers ofAmerica Graffiti.

While this was something brand-new for audiences at the time, it actually made its first appearance elsewhere prior to the release ofAttack of the Clones. In 2002,Star WarsLegends was known as the Expanded Universe, and it was the franchise’s official canon. The Expanded Universe would sometimes introduce elements in books, comics, and more that would then go on to be used or adapted in live-action projects, such as theStar Warsmovies. This was the case for Dex’s Diner.

Dex’s Diner Made Its Debut Two Years Before Attack Of The Clones

Despite making its live-action debut in 2002,Dex’s Diner first appeared in Jude Watson’s 2000 novelJedi Apprentice: The Deadly Hunter. In its first appearance, however, the diner was known as Didi and Astri’s Café, with the father-daughter duo of Didi and Astri Oddo originally owning the diner. As shown in theJedi ApprenticeandJedi Questnovels, Didi and Astri were friendly to the Jedi and valuable sources of underworld knowledge. Both Obi-Wan and his mentor Qui-Gon Jinn were frequent visitors to the diner during Didi and Astri’s ownership.

Didi and Astri would eventually sell the diner to Dexter Jettster, a Besalisk Donut Stand owner and another friend of Obi-Wan Kenobi’s.Fascinatingly, Dexter himself debuted in the Legends continuity as well, first appearing in Jude Watson’sJedi Quest: The Trail of the Jedi, which was published only a month beforeAttack of the Clones. Having been a prospector, smuggler, fighter, and weapons dealer before purchasing Didi and Astri’s Café, Dexter quickly became an invaluable informant to the Jedi like the diner’s original owners.

Dexter Jettster and Obi-Wan Kenobi’s first interactions are shown in Ryder Windham’s 2008 novelThe Life and Legend of Obi-Wan Kenobi.

The Besalisk species has a slightly shorter lifespan than a human in the original Legends continuity, but their modern canon counterparts can live several centuries. The newer version ofDexter Jettster has a remarkable historybefore the events of theStar Warsprequels, with Dexter having served Maz Kanata as a member of her pirate crewat one point. Decades afterStar Wars: Episode II – Attack of the Clones, Jettster would assist the Rebellion during the Coruscant civil war, following Emperor Palpatine’s death.
