Warning: Spoilers ahead for Onyx Storm!

Onyx Stormmay have dashed readers' and Violet’s hopes alike that Xaden can be saved, but a new, unexpected route opened that could hold the key. AfterIron Flame’s shocking ending, it was revealed that Xaden is now turning into a venin after pulling power from the ground. He did it to save Violet (not knowing Lilith Sorrengail had already sacrificed herself to save her daughter) and to defeat the Sage, but, in a cruel twist,Onyx Stormrevealed that the Sage, named Berwyn, is still alive and has big plans for Xaden and Violet both.

Thus, it’s of vital importance that they find a way to reverseXaden’s venin transformation. Not only does Violet want to save her soulmate, but she also points out that Xaden becoming full veninwould make him the most powerful venin to walk the earth, undefeatable should he wholly give himself over to the dark side. However, while they learn some things about the venin inOnyx Storm, they learn more about the seventh breed of dragon. And what they do learn about the venin and a cure is disheartening.

There Is No Cure To Save Xaden From Turning Venin (For Now)

The Irid Dragons Dashed Their Hopes

Jack Barlowe spends a short scene inOnyx Stormtaunting Violet when she asks him if there’s a cure for being venin. Instead of answering her directly, he tells her there’s nothing to cure, asbeing venin isn’t a disease or a problem, but essentially an evolution. To Jack, there’s no reason a venin would want to be cured. However, that’s not an actual answer, which still gave Violet hope that there was still a cure out there.

Who Is The Silver-Haired Venin In Onyx Storm? Fourth Wing’s New Villain Explained

Who is Onyx Storm’s silver-haired venin, and what does the new Fourth Wing villain want with Violet and Andarna? Here’s everything we know.

Unfortunately, her first meeting withThe Empyrean Series’mythical seventh dragon breed, the irid, dashed her hopes of finding a cure. One of the dragons, a golden-eyed female, told her flatly that there was no cure. When Andarna protests that surely if they traded their soul, they can get it back, the female irid goes even further. “It’s not a trade,” she tells them. “The soul is not kept by the earth as dark wielders steal its magic. The power exchange kills the soul one piece at a time, and death has no cure.”

“It’s not a trade. The soul is not kept by the earth as dark wielders steal its magic. The power exchange kills the soul one piece at a time, and death has no cure.”

The only loophole in the dragon’s words is that it’s not fully clear if the dragon knows this for a fact or if it’s their theory. Still, considering thatOnyx Storm’s new dragon breed wields and understands magic like nothing else seen so far in the books, if the irid says it’s impossible, then for all intents and purposes, it is.Right now, there appears to be no hope of saving Xaden, and his actions at the end ofOnyx Stormcertainly seem to confirm that. From the beginning,he always seemed resigned to his fate and not particularly willing to try, perhaps because he knew, as the irid do, that there is no saving a venin once they start to turn.

The Gods Could Intervene In The Empyrean Series Book 4

Deities Suddenly Stepped Onto The Stage In Onyx Storm

However, while it seems that all hope is lost now,it doesn’t mean that it’s lost forever.Considering that the first three books have focused almost exclusively on Violet and Xaden’s unhealthily obsessive relationship and need for each other, it would be pretty strange ifThe Empyrean Seriesbook 4didn’t reveal a new way to save him. It’s entirely possible that the way how was introduced inOnyx Storm: the gods.

Fourth Wing’s Venin & Wyvern Explained: Powers, Purpose & How People Are Turned

The venin and their wyvern in Fourth Wing, previously be believed to be fictitious characters from a fable, are easily the biggest threat to Navarre.

Deities were mentioned inFourth WingandIron Flame, but if the gods and goddesses of the world are actually there, they’ve been quiet. That all changed withOnyx Storm, however, wheretheir importance was highlighted in the brief, epistolary snippets from letters, books, and research before every chapter. For the first time in the books, various deities and their worshippers were showcased, and the gods appeared to intervene, if indirectly. The god of luck, Zihnal, certainly made an impact. But more important is Dunne, the goddess of war. Her priestesses bless Violet with a dagger made from the stone from her temple, and it helps defeat Theophanie.

With the gods stepping in and playing a more significant role in the third book, it seems they will continue to in the fourth.

With the gods stepping in and playing a more significant role in the third book,it seems they will continue to in the fourth. With Violet apparently having been initially dedicated to and touched by Dunne as a small child, that’s bound to be a big storyline in the next book. Surely, if anyone could reverse the venin transformation, it would be a deity. It’s entirely possible that Dunne will grant Xaden’s soul as a sort of boon to Violet, her champion, or something along those lines. It’s just hard to fathom that the next few books won’t offer another way toreverse Xaden becoming a venin, even ifOnyx Stormdidn’t; nothing about them so far has indicated as much.

Onyx Storm Hinted The Venin Serve A Higher Purpose

The Venin’s Role In The Balance Of The Earth Isn’t Yet Known

There was an odd exchange that happened during the meeting with the irid that hints both that the irid don’t know everything there is to know about the venin, and also that the venin may serve a higher purpose. The seventh dragon breed muses on the purpose of venin and suggests that perhaps they should be left to devour the land and then, when they’re left with nothing else to drain, it will force them to evolve and change. The reclusive dragons further muse thatthe way the venin might evolve is through their offspring.

Onyx Stormintroduced an element of “Chosen One” prophecy that the previous books lacked.

It’s a strikingly notable moment for how strange and out of left field the theory is, which suggests thatthe venin will, in fact, play a bigger role in the story than simply being a horde-like enemy. With the reveal that Violet has been touched by Dunne in some way, and the words of the goddess’s priestesses,Onyx Stormintroduced an element of “Chosen One” prophecy that the previous books lacked. If that’s the case, it seems that she and Xaden both have fated paths, and, with Xaden now turning full venin, he could serve as some sort of bridge between venin and humanity. It’s not sure if or how that will unfold, but the third book made it clear there’s more to the venin than once thought, leaving the next few books to reveal it.
