APlayStationState of Play broadcast might be coming before the end of September, and it could end up being an interesting one. With the recent announcement of the powerful but expensive PS5 Pro, Sony has kicked up both excitement and a lot of criticism, amplifying long-time complaints about how this console generation has gone so far. Revealing some exciting upcoming games and offering compelling updates on already-revealed ones should be a major priority, and a State of Play is the perfect way to do that.

State of Play broadcasts have been PlayStation’s go-to approach for over five years now, using a similar format to Nintendo Directs to showcase trailers and sometimes go into depth on upcoming releases. There’s usually something worth looking forward to on display, but reception to the broadcasts can be mixed. The most recent State of Play from May 2024 led with a look atConcord, alive-service shooter that recently shut downonly two weeks after its release. It also revealed the recent hitAstro Bot, however, and it would be nice to see more like that from a new one.

Horizon Zero Dawn Seems Locked For A State Of Play

An ESRB Rating Confirms A Remaster

As reported byVGC, the expectation of a late September State of Play was set byGiant Bombreporter Jeff Grubb, who also gave some hints as to what might be fair game for the broadcast. The biggest piece of information to go on at the moment is a new ESRB rating forHorizon Zero Dawn Remastered, which appears to indicate a new version of the PS4 hit set to release on PS5 and PC.

In addition to remasters, a September State of Play will also likely show off more PS5 Pro enhancements for PS5 games.

LikeThe Last of Us Part 2 Remastered, the effort here feels a bit redundant, as the originalHorizon Zero Dawnstill looks more impressive than some blockbuster games released today. Considering the advancements made inHorizon Zero Dawn: Forbidden West, however, there’s still room to make it even more of a stunner.LEGO Horizon Adventurescould also show up, a blocky take on the franchise that slots into the silly but fun zone thatLEGOgames routinely inhabit.

The rumored LEGO Horizon Adventures has been confirmed at Summer Game Fest. Here’s when it comes out, and what to expect from Aloy’s next adventure.

Grubb also mentions a rumor of “some other kind of remaster in the works that will be even less exciting,“which isn’t exactly an encouraging statement about what might be showcased at the State of Play. As Grubb notes, it’s definitely notBloodborne, considering how much excitement a remaster of that would generate. Amongother PS4 exclusives that could get remasters,God of Warseems like a viable, uninspiring choice, but it might be something more minor likeDays Gone.

What Sony Could Reveal In A September State Of Play

PlayStation Studios Are Working Quietly

Ideally, it would be nice to see some genuinely new games at a September 2024 State of Play, but speculation in that regard gets a bit more nebulous. Sony has plenty of subsidiary studios and partners, but the status of projects at many of them is currently unclear. The Last of Usdeveloper Naughty Dog is known to be working on new single-player games, and with four years having passed since its last completely new title, it’s not impossible that a Naughty Dog game could be the centerpiece of the showcase.

Leaks from Insomniac Games earlier this year indicate that aVenomgame is in the works for 2025 and set to release before the already-revealedMarvel’s Wolverine, which is slated for 2026. Insomniac might not want to revealVenomquite yet, but if it doesn’t make the cut for a September State of Play, an announcement should still show up in the coming months.

I’m Honestly Shocked Two Major Marvel Games Didn’t Show Up At SDCC 2024

Marvel Gaming revealed its new branding at San Diego Comic-Con, along with new footage of Marvel Rivals, but I was surprised two games didn’t show up.

If Guerilla Games is about to announce aHorizon Zero DawnRemaster, it’s unlikely that the studio will show anything else, although a multiplayerHorizontitle is reportedly on the horizon. Sucker Punch Productions should have something in the works, perhaps a directfollow-up toGhost of Tsushima.Santa Monica Studio is allegedly developing more than just anotherGod of War, but it might be a while longer before anything new shows up on that front.

Other Games Coming To PlayStation 5 Soon

Death Stranding 2, Marathon, & More

As far as already-revealed games go,Death Stranding 2is a likely candidate, as the State of Play would line up closely with the Tokyo Game Show 2024, where the game will receive a special stage presentation. TheSilent Hill 2remake could always make another appearance ahead of its October 8 launch. Bungie’sMarathonlive-service reboot might be in trouble, but it’s a contender if it’s not.

Silent Hill Fans Have More Than SH2 Remake To Look Forward To This Year

Fans of Silent Hill have another horror-focused game to look forward to in 2024 that is developed by the creator of the original Silent Hill.

State of Plays often include games that aren’t exclusive to PlayStation, so major multi-platform titles could also show up. The nextLike a Dragongame was just revealed asLike a Dragon: Pirate Yakuza in Hawaii, so that could make the cut givenLike a Dragon’s extensive history on PlayStation. Previously revealed third-party games and even indies could fill out much of the showcase, especially if any are receiving significant PS5 Pro enhancements.

When To Expect A September 2024 State Of Play

One State Of Play Date Seems Likely

At the moment, however, it looks like the State of Play will happen in advance of Tokyo Game Show. Grubb indicates thatSeptember 24 is the most likely date for the event, a Tuesday that lines up with the mid-week approach commonly employed by digital game showcases. Following the format of past State of Plays, it should be broadcast at 6:00 PM ET and last for less than an hour.

It won’t be long now until a September State of Play if one does happen, so all questions about the showcase should be answered shortly. It’s probably safest to assume that most games will be remasters, titles that already have confirmed release dates, or comparatively minor third-party offerings. There are a lot of options as far as potential new first-partyPlayStationtitles at a September 2024 State of Play, but if one does show up, it’s best taken as a pleasant surprise.
