TheEnergon Universehas lost a fan-favorite, as oneTransformerscharacter falls in battle in the latest issue ofVoid Rivals. Thealien bounty hunter Skuxxoidonly appeared in a handful of episodes of the original cartoon, but his frequent appearances in the Energon Universe have made the minorTransformerscharacter a fan-favorite. Sadly, those fans might want to gird themselves, as Skuxxoid’s time in Skybound’s new shared continuity has come to a definitive end.

Coming from the creative team of Robert Kirkman, Lorenzo De Felici, Patricio Delpeche and Rus Wooton,Void Rivals #16opens with a battle between Skuxxoid and the forces of Cobra-La. The previous issue ended on a cliffhanger, with Skuxxoid capturing theCobra-La vessel sent to declare war on Cybertron.

Void Rivals #16 Skuxxoid is cut in half by Cobra-La warrior Drakula

Skuxxoid winds up getting more than he bargained for when Pythona and her Cobra-La guards storm out of their ship with their signature “Cobra-La-La-La” battle-cry. Skuxxoid puts up a fight at first, but it isn’t long beforethe alien bounty hunterfalls in combat, being sliced in half by a massive sword.

The Energon Universe’s little touches are the reason why Skuxxoid took on a life of his own and became so popular in a relatively short amount of time.

RIP Skuxxoid: A Transformers Fan-Favorite Falls in Battle

Skuxxoid’s Popularity Is a Testament to Skybound’s Energon Universe Reboot

It’s a death that stings, but it really shows how Skybound and the creative teams on eachEnergon Universe book have built up a new continuity that involves the reader emotionally. It’s likely that many casual fans had never even heard of Skuxxoid before his debut inVoid Rivals#3. The race of alien bounty hunters known as the Skuxxoid first appeared in the original G1Transformerscartoon, and barely appeared in any subsequentTransformersmedia. Yet in replacing the group with a single individual - who claims “Skuxxoid” as his name - the Energon Universe has transformed the alien from bit part to involving antihero.

TheVoid Rivalscreative team have gone out of their way to turn what could be a throwaway Easter Egg into a well-developed character in his own right. Throughout his appearances inVoid Rivals, readers have learned that he worked as a bounty hunter to support his wife and children. This storyline came to a rather heartbreaking reveal inVoid Rivals#9, whereSkuxxoid finally arrived home only to reveal that his family are no longer around. Little touches like this are the reason why Skuxxoid took on a life of his own and became so popular in a relatively short amount of time.

…But Skuxxoid’s End Proves They’re Not Done for Shock Value

Some fans have been critical of thehigh death toll throughout the Energon Universe books, but no death has been done purely for shock value. It’s a credit to the creative team that death in theEnergon Universecarries actual weight, makingVoid Rivalsand the new era ofTransformerssomething special.
