Despite the success ofDeadpool & Wolverine, Ryan Reynolds viewsDeadpool’s future in theMarvel Cinematic Universein a very different light. Reynolds gives life to one of the most popular superheroes in live-action. TheDeadpool movie trilogyhas broken several records, both at Fox and Marvel Studios, withDeadpool & Wolverine’s $1.3 billion at the worldwide box office making it the highest-grossing R-rated movie of all time. All that success has led to questions emerging about whetherDeadpool 4 could happen. Sadly, it seems like a new Deadpool film might not be in the cards after all.
Speaking with Spider-Man star Andrew Garfield onVariety’s Actors on Actors,Ryan Reynolds revealed Deadpool’s future is likely to come as a supporting character in someone else’s movie.

According to the MCU’s new arrival, he views Deadpool as a supporting character. To center the story on him, Reynolds says he has to work hard to strip Wade Wilson of everything and make him an underdog, which the star does not think he can do again. Instead, Reynolds believes that Deadpool could play a supporting role infuture MCU movies, name-dropping a possible Channing Tatum Gambit film as an option. Check out the full quote below:
“I see Deadpool as a supporting character, much more than he is the main [character]. We center him sometimes because that’s what they want, but you can’t center him unless you take everything away from him. You have to create a situation where he is so much the underdog, and I don’t think I can do that again.

If he comes back, it’s gonna be in someone else’s movie. Channing Tatum, so excited to play Gambit, and I would happily be a fifth banana in his movie or anyone else’s.”
What Ryan Reynolds' Deadpool Movie Future Comments Mean
The Merc With A Mouth’s Future Just Received A Surprising Update
Based on the success ofDeadpool & Wolverine, a new sequel starring Hugh Jackman and Ryan Reynolds, or at least Deadpool 4 with the latter, seemed almost certain. However,Reynolds' comments tease that he does not want to be the focus of attention again, instead playing a supporting role as Deadpool going forward.Deadpool & Wolverine’s endingworks well toward that, with Wade Wilson having saved his universe, being in a good place with his friends, and having had a major MCU adventure already. His return does not need to be as the main star of a new film.
All 10 Marvel Movie Teams That Could Appear In Avengers 6
After years without Avengers movies, the MCU will debut two major entries for its biggest franchise, and Secret Wars is set up to feature major teams.
With the MCU’s reboot of the X-Men set to come afterAvengers: Secret Wars—Marvel Studios' X-Men movieis in development — Deadpool could appear for several more years without starring in another solo film. Due to the character’s popularity and proven box office draw status, Reynolds' decision could mean that Deadpool will likely be appearing in many projects from now on to satisfy the audience’s demand. Due to his comedic nature, Deadpool would be a good fit with lighter characters like Spider-Man or as a foil to darker characters like Moon Knight. An Avengers role also seems likely.

Our Take On Ryan Reynolds' Deadpool Movie Future Comments
Deadpool’s MCU Future Looks Promising Either Way
I would love to continue having new hilarious Deadpool movies. That said, I wouldn’t have a problem if Reynolds were to get his way and Deadpool appeared as a supporting character from now on. Withthe MCU’s X-Men reboot looming, this would allow the new mutants to be the center of attention, while Wade Wilson could still be part of their stories, even playing important roles, though not as the focus of the films. The move also allowsDeadpoolto cross over with more characters, and a team role is something I hope pans out for him.

The merc with the mouth first appeared in an issue ofNew Mutantsin 1990, and since then has gone on to get his own series and a massive cult following. With his incredible powers of healing and regeneration, Deadpool was initially depicted as an X-Men villain but went on to become an anti-hero. After getting his own movie series starting in 2016, the third Deadpool movie finally brings the wisecracking, fourth-wall-breaking character into the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
