A revival season ofScrubsis on the way, and it looks like creator Bill Lawrence has found the perfect way to make it work. The quirky medical sitcom released its first season back in 2001 and officially wrapped up with season 9 in 2009. Since then, there have been constant requests for a reboot, but the confirmation that something was in the works came only recently. Of course, even the show’s popularity and the hopes for a reunion are no guarantee that the revival will be a success. However, Lawrence knows how to giveScrubsseason 10 its best shot.

As Lawrence has worked on recent popular projects likeBad Monkey,Shrinking, andTed Lasso, he has continued to provideupdates on theScrubsrevival. The producer and screenwriter has remained optimistic that the new season will become a reality, and most of the original cast seem to be on the same page.Zach Braff and Donald Faison have said that they and their fellow stars are eager to return, which is imperative to a potentialScrubsseason 10. However, Lawrence knows this isn’t all that the reboot would need.

Scrubs Season 10 Blending Returning & New Characters Is The Best Choice For A Revival

O.G. Characters For Familiarity, New Characters For Growth

In anupdate regardingScrubs, Lawrence said that he thinks the reboot is very close to happening. He noted thatseason 10 would only be worth making if there is a “combo” of returning and new actors. Lawrence is spot on with this conclusion. AScrubsrevival absolutely must reveal what JD, Turk, Carla, and Elliot have been up to all these years, but there’s no reason to continue the story if there is nothing new that would build onto the previous series. After all,Scrubswas always about the “super idealistic” new faces entering the medical field (as Lawrence put it), and a revival just wouldn’t feel organic without this same concept.

Though theScrubsrevival is in talks, it has yet to be officially confirmed.

Scrubs' New Revival Characters Are Still A Big Risk After Season 9

New Characters Could Still Be A Problem

While aScrubsrevival season must have new faces to carry the story forward, this doesn’t necessarily mean the new project is a shoo-in.After all,Scrubsseason 9 mixed old and new characters, and the installment bombed. So much had changed about the series (from the setting to the channel) that it no longer felt like the same beloved sitcom. The same is sure to be true, to an extent, ofScrubsseason 10 since so much time will have passed since audiences last saw these characters. However, the revival can learn from the failed finalScrubsseason’s mistakes.

J.D., Elliot, Turk, and Carla must remain the series' heart and soul, but their relationship with new, younger doctors also requires attention.

Though original characters were featured regularly inScrubsseason 9, thebalance was mainly shifted to the new faces.Faison’s Turk and John C. McGinley’s Dr. Cox were the only two who remained after the first couple of episodes, and they didn’t even get much attention. This cannot be the case inScrubsseason 10. There must be a careful balance regarding which characters take center stage and when. J.D., Elliot, Turk, and Carla must remain the series' heart and soul, but their relationship with new, younger doctors also requires attention. Thankfully, it seems that Lawrence already gets this.
