With a castled by Rihanna, who is voicing Smurfette, the 2025 movieis the newest take on the miniature blue fantastical characters created byBelgin comic artistPeyo.Smurfsis directed byShrek the ThirdandPuss in Boots' Chris Miller, and in addition to Rihanna, the voice cast includes James Corden, Nick Offerman, JP Karliak, Dan Levy, Amy Sedaris, Natasha Lyonne, Sandra Oh, Octavia Spencer, Nick Kroll, Hannah Waddingham, Alex Winter, Billie Lourd, Xolo Maridueña, Kurt Russell, and John Goodman.
Paramounthas now released a trailer that provides a first look atSmurfs. The trailer shows Smurfette and her fellow Smurfs living in a village where they have a nonstop party and nothing ever goes wrong. That all changes whenPapa Smurf is kidnapped and the Smurfs must travel to the real world to save him, where they encounter humans and the villainous Gargamel and Razamel in a story presented in an animation and live-action hybrid. Smurfette Must Be The Hero This Time
From a new Smurf called Influencer to featuring new music from Rihanna,the 2025 movie attempts to modernize the Smurfs while still featuring many of the classic characters and elements. The premise of needing to rescue Papa Smurf, and Smurfette leading the rescue mission, is also part of a more modernized take. Smurfette was often the one kidnapped and Papa Smurf was the one often leading the charge to rescue her in past iterations.
The introduction of the Paris Division of the International Neighborhood Watch Smurfs promises to bring even more new Smurfs and exciting allies to the story as well.
While their narrative roles may be swapped, the classic Smurfette and Papa Smurf are still at the forefront of the2025 animated movie, andthe evil wizard Gargamel is still the one terrorizing them. Gargamel is not the only evil wizard threatening the Smurfs, though, as he works alongside his brother Razamel. The introduction of the Paris Division of the International Neighborhood Watch Smurfs promises to bring even more new Smurfs and exciting allies to the story as well.

Adding new Smurf characters is inevitable, but a Smurf named Influencer feels like a contrived attempt at modernizing the timeless and fantastical characters. With the 2011The Smurfsmovie featuring the titular characters being transported to Manhattan,Smurfs' plot feels like it is partially retreading what has already been done.
The2025 moviewill have a family-friendly appeal, although it releases in a crowded summer, with its July 18 release coming on the heels ofJurassic World RebirthandSuperman.
