This article contains spoilers for Squid Game season 2.

Squid Gameseason 3 gets a narrow release window from creator Hwang Dong-hyuk. The long-awaited second installment of the Emmy-winning South Korean survival thriller, with Lee Jung-jae’s Gi-hun out for revenge, ends on a big cliffhanger. But thankfully, unlike the long gap between the first two installments, viewers won’t have to wait too long to see what happens next. Although it was previously confirmed thatSquid Gameseason 3will be out in 2025, new comments reveal that the show won’t maintain its December release date.

In an interview withVariety, Hwang narrowed down the release window for season 3 and reveals thatit will be released either in the summer or fall months of 2025. The series creator, who wrote and directed all of season 2, responded to what comes next and previewed the path forward for Gi-hun. He also mentioned thata launch date will be formally announced soon:

At this point, anything I might say is going to be a spoiler, so I want to be cautious. But what I can say is, after season 2 launches, I believe we will be announcing the launch date for season 3 soon.I probably expect that to launch around summer or fall next year. But as for the storyline of the third season, Gi-hun having lost everything, including his best friend, and all of his attempts going to failure, it’s now, what is he going to be like? What state is Gi-hun going to be in? And what will he choose to do? Will he continue on with the mission? Is he going to give up or persist? And so you’re going to meet our character Gi-hun at a very critical crossroads as we begin the third season. Gi-hun will not be the man he was in season 2.

What Squid Game Season 3 Means For The Show

It’s The End

By theend ofSquid Gameseason 2, Gi-hun has carried out his plan for revenge against those responsible for the deadly games. It doesn’t get him very far, in part becauseThe Front Man (Lee Byung-hun) has joined the games as a playerand is essentially functioning as a double agent that Gi-hun doesn’t know about. In any case, the players' rebellion ends in tragedywhen Gi-hun’s friend Park Jung-bae (Lee Seo-hwan) is shot and killed after joining the games.

After a significant break between seasons, Hwang’s comments reinforce thatNetflix is not going to wait too long to say goodbye to one of its defining series. The creator is likely refraining from mentioning a more concrete release window because there will be a formal announcement when the new year rolls around. But in the best-case scenario,Squid Gameseason 3 could be out next June or July which would mean that there’s roughly six months untilJung-bae’s stunning deathis resolved.

Our Take On Squid Game Season 3

It Could Be Tough To Stick The Landing

The show’s much-anticipated second installment has only just been released. Still, once enough time has passed, and once enough data is available, it will be interesting to dig into whether the extended break between seasons did significant damage to one of TV’s biggest surprise hits. It will be interesting to see, as well, how a smaller gap might work to maintain the show’s momentum.Squid Gameseason 2 has only 7 episodes, with the creator explaining that he felt it was best to go with fewer episodes. So, at this point, the third and final batch of episodes will have a lot of weight to carry.
