Warning! This post contains SPOILERS for Ewoks #2Star Warshas just changed a fan-favoriteReturn of the Jedihero with only a single word. As seen in Marvel’s new and canonicalEwoksseries, the residents of Endor’s Bright Tree village are in conflict with a remaining force of Imperials in search of hidden weapons. To that need, a familiar face has risen to defend his fellow Ewoks, albeit in a very surprising way that changes his character forever.
InStar Wars: Ewoks #2from Steve Orlando, Álvaro López, and Laura Braga, the Ewok tribe of Bright Tree village is still reeling from the recent Battle of Endorand the “cruel ones” whom they beat back with the Rebellion’s help. However, this new issue sees a group of Imperials and hired bounty hunters attempting to use the local myths to manipulate the Ewoks and gain their help finding a secret weapons cache the Empire left on the forest moon. When that fails, the group of outsiders demands a hostage to serve as their guide. However, Wicket strongly disagrees…by surprisingly speaking Galactic Basic:

While he may not yet have a full grasp of the most common language in theStar Warsgalaxy, the fact that Wicket can speak any Galactic Basic at all is quite impressive. Likewise, it’s an ability he was unknown to possess before he tells the Imperials “enough” in this new issue. However, it stands to reason Wicket picked up a few words from Princess Leia, Threepio, and more of the Rebels duringReturn of the Jediand the Battle of Endor.
Wicket Is Becoming A Major Ewok Hero In The Star Wars Canon
But Speaking Basic Is Quite A Surprise
As seen in the issues of Star Wars: Ewoks published thus far,Wicket is a minority voice in Bright Tree offering a more balanced caution when it comes to outsiders, rather than mistrusting and forbidding future contact completely. After all, Wicket was the first Ewok to befriend one of the Rebels inReturn of the Jedi, having brought Princess Leia to Bright Tree before the rest of the Rebellion became Bright Tree’s allies. That said, the young Ewok hero is also trying to become a stronger warrior in this new series.
Having joinedthe mighty Ewok warrior Meedroon his hunts on the outskirts of Bright Tree, Wicket is seeking to learn how to become stronger as someone the rest of the tribe might respect and listen to more often. However, all eyes were certainly on Wicket when he openly defied these new outsiders who began threatening his people and started speaking their language. While these Imperials may be more dangerous to Bright Tree than the Rebels,Wicket’s new ability to speak Galactic Basic proves that working with outsiders can still be good, the only reason he knows how to communicate with these new foes in the first place.

What’s Going To Happen To Wicket Now?
Taken Hostage By Imperial Forces
Impressed by Wicket’s ability to speak Basic, General Koyatta decides to stun Wicket and take him as their desired hostage. To that end, it looks as though Wicket will have no choice but to become the Imperials' guide to this hidden weapons cache. However, it stands to reason that both Meedro and a fellow Ewok loner known as the Red Ghost will come together to save the young Ewok warrior in the issues to come. At any rate,it’s quite impressive that any Ewok can speak Galactic Basic, a major step in the species' ability to one day evolve and join theStar Warsgalaxy at large.
