Storm has been on a whirlwind journey over the past several years; the final stretch oftheX-franchise’s Krakoan Erafeatured her becoming a mutant leader even greater than her mentors Professor X and Magneto, and the character’s new prominence outside of her role inX-Menhas only continued her evolution. For that reason Marvel’s newStormongoing series is perhaps one of the most exhilarating books in the publisher’s roster right now, especially with the fantastic art that has come out of it so far.
Storm Unleashes Her Full Power That No X-Men Adaptation Has Ever Even Approached
A new feat of power from Storm helps solidify her as one of X-Men’s strongest Omega mutants, whilst introducing something completely different.
As series artist Lucas Werneck put it:
Fashion is always one of the many tools that I reach for when looking for inspiration. You can tell so much about a character through their clothes, and this kind of visual narrative is something that I love. Now you can imagine how excited I was when Marvel gave me the opportunity and space to work with the fashion of such an iconic character like Ororo.
I’m really trying to give her a sense of style. I imagine her having this kind of goddess aura, but she also has so much humanity in her, so the challenge here is to translate all of the aspects that define her in the way she dresses, moves, talks—the way that she lives. I’m having so much fun, and I hope that the fans enjoy all the tiny details that we’re building for her along with all the surprises that we cooking in this series.

Werneck understands just how important costuming is to a hero. To loosely adopt an old phrase, it’s not the costume that makes the person but the person who makes the costume – but in this context,Storm’s new costume is a necessary means of symbolically reflecting a new era for the character. Werneck wants to create a piece of iconography to make Storm feel like the goddess she needs to be depicted as, and the above is the finished product.
