Tom Ellis Was Caught Off Guard By Tell Me Lies Season 1

Screen Rant: You and Meaghan are married in real life, and you’ve worked together before, but how was getting a chance to collaborate on this specific project?

Tom Ellis: I was just really excited because I loved season 1, and I loved what Meaghan did with it and with the characters in it, and I didn’t think it was an opportunity that would ever arise to be perfectly honest. When I watched the first season, I didn’t think this was ever a show that I would be performing in. But when she came to me and said that she’d had this idea for this character in the second season, and would I think about playing him, I was really excited to have more to do with her.

We worked together before, but it wasn’t as prevalent a character in the show and certainly not of this nature. Collaborating with her is something that I will always want to do, not just because she’s my wife, but because I think she’s really brilliant at what she does. She’s really, really good at working with actors and being able to give actors very simple, but very effective, notes and really make you think a lot more than you would’ve done about certain aspects.

Speaking of season 1, obviously, a lot went down in the finale. Which of the twists surprised you most when you watched it?

Tom Ellis: Gosh, I think so many, but I think finding out about Stephen properly and what happened with the accident was definitely a big one for me. But I don’t know, I think there were so many. There were too many to think about and pinpoint one on its own, really. It was like twist after twist after twist.

But I think it’s a complex show in that sense, but then it’s not complex when you break it down to a very human element about the obsessions that people have when love or sex is on the line. I don’t think I would’ve been the particular target audience for it, but I’m so glad that I watched it. I just thought it was great.

Viewers Will Get To Know Oliver Through Bree In Tell Me Lies Season 2

“He’s quite an ambiguous character. He doesn’t give a lot away.”

We don’t know too much about your character. We know he’s a professor at the college, but what else can you share about him and the role that he’s going to play in season 2?

Tom Ellis: I think Oliver is portrayed as a hard taskmaster and people are intimidated by him, but he’s quite an ambiguous character. He doesn’t give a lot away. So I think there are things that will surprise people about him once you get to know him a bit more through Bree. But he’s someone who keeps his cards very close to his chest.

And for me, playing that sort of character was quite new territory for me. I’ve been playing quite open, warm characters, I guess, over the last few years, and to play someone who’s so secretive and so quietly nuanced in certain ways—there’s an ambiguity about him that I really found quite fascinating.

There are always changes from script to screen, so how did your character evolve as you started filming? Were there any nuances you added or things you discovered the more you were in Oliver’s shoes?

Tom Ellis: I think there were things that I was fighting naturally. I have been told that one of my qualities is I have a sort of generic warmth about me, and I found it quite challenging to switch that off. But I think that was part of what was important about Oliver is that he doesn’t give too much away. He doesn’t let too much in, and those were things that we sort of stumbled across along the way. I think the biggest challenge for me, to be honest, was to kind of switch off my instincts and allow myself to get colder.

Out of all the episodes this season, I’m curious if there’s one that you’re looking forward to fans seeing most.

Tom Ellis: There are a couple of episodes that I really love. There’s Episode 6, the Thanksgiving episode, which is just a really kind of standalone episode as it were. And then I’m really excited for people to see the finale because there are so many things that happen in it. I rewatched it again today, and I was like, oh my God, there’s so much packed into this. It’s like relentless gut punches that keep coming.
