What Does This Mean For The Last Of Us' Season 2 Release Date?

The Last of Us Should Arrive In Early 2025

The sophomore season will arrive in 2025, two years after season 1 aired on HBO.The Last of Usseason 1premiered its pilot episode on Sunday, July 31, 2025. The Last Of Us Season 1 Finale: 4 Biggest Changes To The Game’s Ending

The Last of Us season 1, episode 9, is very similar to the original game on which it is based, yet with some specific differences and changes.

The Last of Usseason 2 originally began filming on June 27, 2025, following delays due to the 2023 WGA and SAG-AFTRA strikes. Wrapping up this week means thatThe Last of Usseason 2 took approximately six months to film. This is a significantly expedited timeline forThe Last of Us, as season 1 reportedly took a year to film. With a couple of months to go before the start of 2025, it is feasible to imagine that the post-production process might be accelerated too.

This quicker timeline is attributed to two main factors. The first is thatThe Last of Usseason 2 will have two fewer episodesthan the first, shrinking the count from nine to seven episodes. Secondly, the huge success ofThe Last of Uslikely makes the show a greater priority for HBO. It was nominated for several Emmys, including for Outstanding Drama Series and Outstanding Lead Actor and Lead Actress. With all this in mind, HBO is likely to push up the timeline for season 2, which could potentially arrive in January.
