The most underrated superhero series in comics today is coming to a close, as creatorMichel Fiffeis bringingDeath of Coprato Image Comics next year. The “superhero revenge machine” that has run for forty-five issues and a handful of specials is set to go out with a bang.
Written and drawn by Michel Fiffe,Coprahas been a staple on the indie comics scenesince it launched in 2012. Heavily inspired by DCSuicide Squadcomics from the 1980’s,Copratells the story of group of super-villains working off their sentence by engaging in high-risk missions. After they are betrayed by the U.S. government, the team goes on the run while trying to stay alive.
Scheduled to run for four issues,Death of Coprabrings the story of Lloyd, Guthie, Wir, Gracie and Sonia Stone to a close in what is hopefully an epic fashion.

The writer/artist takes the building blocks of a superhero universe and reassembles it into something wholly fresh and new,an entirely unique approach to superhero comics filtered through an underground, indie sensibility. Fiffe’s mixed media approach to the artwork also makesCopraunlike anything else on the stands, as the artist’s use of layouts and design fuel one of the best-looking packages in comics today.
Initially self-published by the artist himself,Copraswitched over to Image for a brief run of issues, before Fiffe switched back to self-publishing and allowed Image to handle the collected editions.
Fiffe looks to be pulling out all the stops for his grand finale, with a round of variant covers forDeath of Copra#1. In addition to three covers by Fiffe himself, there’s also a variant by comics luminaryJeff Lemire, whose ownBlack Hammeracts as a nice companion piece toCopra. Fiffe also creates a special Image crossover cover with Rob Liefeld’s Bloodstrike, which Fiffe previously wrote and drew in theBloodstrike: The Brutalistsminiseries. Whether they’ve been they’re from the beginning or are looking to jump in just in time for the climax, fans will certainly have plenty of options when picking up their copy ofDeath of Copra.
Coprais a Superhero Epic for the Modern Age
Given that this is all the creation of one artist, readers can expect thatDeath of Coprawill truly be the final chapter of this story. Whereas various corporate characters such as Superman, Captain America andDoctor Strange have all had high-profile deaths, they inevitably wind up being brought back at some point. The creator-owned world plays by entirely different rules, so fans can at the very least expect a definitive ending forMichel Fiffe’sDeath of CoprafromImage Comics.
