The War Between the Land and the SeaisnotDoctor Who’s first attempt to make a spinofffrom the main series. Before its development,Torchwoodwas made in 2006 and ran for four seasons. The franchise also led to the creation ofThe Sarah Jane Adventuresandthe 2016 showClass, the latter of which only received one season. All three shows received generally positive reviews during their runs, setting up a relatively high standard forDoctor Whospinoffs.

“Davies needs to follow his own rules for The War Between the Land and Sea, making sure the spinoff doesn’t just feel like watching Doctor Who. On the other hand, it still needs to recognizably be part of the Doctor Who universe. It’s a delicate balance, but the showrunner has already proven he can do it.” -Daniel Bibby,Doctor Who’s New Show Must Follow The Golden Rule Moffat’s Failed Spinoff Ignored
WithThe War Between the Land and the Sea,the series will attempt to attain a similar quality.Since theDoctor Who60th anniversary specialslast year, the BBC series' team has been leaning in hard on the resuscitation of the series, with the upcoming spinoffundoubtedly being part of this plan. With a limited episode count, hopefullyThe War Between the Land and the Seacan stay focused enough to keep the franchise’s success rate going.
