Today’s Connections Category Hints
SEPTEMBER 14 #460
One sure way to win atConnectionsis by becoming very good at recognizing what the categories are likely to be. This can be difficult, as there are often tricks the editor uses to deceive you. To help you overcome that deception, we have four clues for today’s categories:
8 Vertex Strategies To Quickly Solve The Picture
The New York Times Vertex game asks you to form a picture by connecting dots, but you have to understand the image to solve this puzzle quickly.
Once you have examined the clues, you may find yourself still needing a second nudge. If you do, we have all the category names listed out for you:

___ KING
VINTAGE
WINERY
If you want to inspect a bottle of wine for yourself, you are going to want to know a fair bit of information. The type of GRAPE that was used, the REGION it was grown in, the WINERY it was made in, and the VINTAGE, or year, that it was bottled. All of those things arevery important information to any connoisseur of wineand often determine personal taste and preferences.
SLIDER
SWITCH
SLIDER was a bit of a deceptive word here, as together with SUB and BURGER, there could have been a nice sandwich category. That category sounds quite nice, but, alas, those words belong in different categories. Instead, these words areall types of inputs you can find on a console, which makes this category feel very 80s sci-fi. Like getting a Death Star ready to blow up a planet.
8 NYT Spelling Bee Strategies To Keep Your Streak Alive
The Spelling Bee puzzles created as a New York Times game build a streak of correct answers to get you more points, but they can be hard to keep.
SUB
SUPER
PRO and SUPER seemed to go together even before I knew what this category really was. Trying to figure out that RETRO and SUB also fit was a bit harder. I typicallydon’t think of RETRO as a prefix, so that was perhaps the hardest part of this category specifically. SUB is in here as well, which was sadly not a sandwich, but once SLIDER had gone in the previous category it was a lot easier to move the other two words around.
LION
PROM
This category was a little harder, but as is the case with the last category, it often becomes just the leftover words you pick at the end. I was inclined to thinkthat the weird words went togetheras that usually happens with the last category, but wanted RETRO and PROM to switch for a little while. Eventually, I was able to figure out what this category was, but not until it was very nearly too late.
