On the heels of its director confirming filming had wrapped, theUntil Dawnmovie release date has been revealed. Unlike many genre companions, development on the film adaptation of Supermassive Games' 2015 hit horror title has been a relatively quick one, with the movie confirmed to be in the works in early 2024 withAnnabelle: Creation’s David F. Sandberg and Gary Dauberman reuniting to direct and write it, respectively.Until Dawn’s storyrevolves around a group of friends who reunite one year after the death of one of their friends on a remote camping trip, only to be tormented by unknown forces.

Now,Sony Picturesand Screen Gems have revealed that they have set a release date for theUntil Dawnmovie adaptation. The horror project is set to hit theaters on July 15, 2025, putting it in theaters just four months ahead of the original game’s 10th anniversary. What This Release Date Means For Until Dawn

It’ll Be Facing Another Game Adaptation

In addition to arriving in time for the game’s 10th anniversary,Until Dawn’s release date also pits the horror movie against another video game adaptation, that beingA Minecraft Movie. The Jack Black-led game adaptation, his third in just two years after the blockbuster success ofThe Super Mario Bros. Movieandinfamous flopping ofBorderlands, is currently set to hit theaters on April 4. Though the two may be releasing in the same month, the three-week gap and different genres will likely prove a benefit for Sandberg’s film at the box office.

With Sonic the Hedgehog and Mortal Kombat receiving sequels, video game movies are getting better. However, there are other options that can work too.

As far as newer releases go,Until Dawnwill still have some hefty competition, beginning bysharing its opening weekend with Ben Affleck’sThe Accountant 2, whose original film overcame its mixed reviews to become a box office smash, grossing over $155 million against its $44 million production budget. The following week also sees the release of Marvel’sThunderbolts*which, ifCaptain America: Brave New Worldcan keep the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s financial win streak going afterDeadpool & Wolverine, will likely dominate the box office for at least its first two weeks.

Aside from its competition, though, theUntil Dawnmovie coming roughly six months from now may actually prove beneficial when looking at the franchise’s recent reputation. Unlike the original release, Supermassive Games’Until Dawnremake has been met with generally mixed reviewsdue to technical problems and a sense of being unnecessary. This has also led to reports of the game’s sales being fewer than the infamously shutteredConcord, putting a damper on the property’s name, especially amid rumors of a game sequel.

Our Take On Until Dawn’s Release Date

The Lack Of New Horror Releases Should Be A Big Help

Though there may be some competition for it on its current date,Until Dawn’s release date could very well work out in its favor, namely because of the fact there are few other horror releases around that time. The only one in April is that of Blumhouse and Christopher Landon’sDrop, while there are no major ones after the game adaptation until the end of June with theback-to-back arrivals of 28 Years LaterandMEGAN 2.0. As such, those looking for an exciting new chiller on the big screen are sure to flock toUntil Dawn, even if they’re unfamiliar with the source material.
