“Bashar” Is A Military Rank In The Dune Franchise
Within the elaborate sci-fi world of Dune, a “Bashar” is the term for a high-ranking military official appointed by the Emperor,similar to a general or even a shõgun. It is a military rank that is slightly higher than a Colonel in the “Duniverse”. A Bashar is typically assigned to a designated planet and has military jurisdiction and leadership powers over it. In the case of Desmond Hart, he essentially is the head of the Emperor’s military personnel, known collectively as the Sardaukar.

According toDune Wiki, the Bashar is not the highest possible military rank in the Duniverse but it is still highly prestigious. “Ranks above it included Supreme Bashar and Burseg. A later title, Supreme Bashar, was used by the Bene Gesserit to indicate their most powerful military rank during the time of the Honored Matres.” Additionally,Bashar is an Arabic proper name that means"bringer of glad tidings". Ironically, in Desmon Hart’s case, he does not appear to be interested in bringing about “glad tidings.”
Why Emperor Corrino Makes Desmond Hart His Bashar In Dune: Prophecy
For his political gain and to protect himself
Emperor Corrino realizes that not only is Desmond Hart a great weapon he has at his disposal but he is also someone who he can trust, or so it seems.Corrino is also likely scared of Hart’s magical powersand would hate to be on the wrong side of them. He aims to avoid sharing a similar fate to Sister Kasha, Pruwet Richese, and the several noble House members who Desmond burned alive to protect the Emperor in episode 4. There’s no doubt that Emperor Corrino wants Desmond Hart on his side – that is, until Hart potentially reveals his true purpose for coming to Salusa Secundus in theDune: Prophecyfinale.
