Baldur’s Gate 3is full of interesting and complex characters, including a few that never even appear on-screen. One such character isLenore DeHurst, a cleric of Mystra and resident of the arcane tower in the Underdark. Lenore affects several parts of the story in acts one and three but is only ever present in left-behind notes and the dialogue of other NPCs.
As such, the player’s knowledge of Lenore as a person is fairly limited, yet the bits of lore that do exist have made many players curious about her story and, more importantly, her disappearance. It seems thatLenore dropped off the face of Faerunsome years before thestart ofBG3, and while there are some clues as to where she ended up, the game provides nothing concrete. However, several prominent theories have sprung up around Lenore’s fate, one of which likely holds some kernel of truth.
Lenore’s Death By Bulette May Have Been Retconned
An Old Theory With Oddly Removed Evidence
For a long time, before the full game was even out,the popular belief was that Lenorewaseaten by her pet Bulette.This was due to several clues left around her tower that she was attempting to train the creature despite warnings of its aggression. In the early access ofBaldur’s Gate 3, the player could find theSlippery Chain Shirtinside the Bulette’s stomach, an item which seems in line with Lenore’s other magical creations, hinting that her pet swallowed her whole.
The Bulette can be encountered primarily in locations important to Lenore: her tower, the grave site of her dog, and the area around the Sussur tree she was researching. This indicates that she has formed a strong bond with the creature.
In the finished game, however, while the hints at Lenore training this Bulette remain,the armor in its stomach has been removed.It has been replaced with theBloodguzzler Garb, a set of barbarian armor very much not in line with Lenore’s style, and the Slippery Chain Shirt has been moved to a chest. This move seems very intentional and hints at Lenore’s survival being retconned as the game’s writing process continued.
Notes In The Sorcerous Vaults Indicate Lenore’s Whereabouts
A Telling Correspondence Between Two Arcane Researchers
Rather, Lenore’s location may be somewhere outside Faerun entirely. A note can be found inBG3’s Act Three, in the vaults below Ramazith’s Tower, written by Lenore and addressed to the wizard Lorroakan. She writes abouta visit from a strange extraplanar individual, a likely nod toTarquin fromDivinity: Original Sin II, and her curiosity about his origins. According to its description, this note was penned years ago, and it may hint that Lenore’s studies turned to other worlds in her later years.
Baldur’s Gate 3: Who Is Yrre The Sparkstruck?

If Lenore somehow ended up traveling to another plane, it would explain her mysterious disappearance and her partner, Yrre, being unable to find her. While Lenore’s study materials in her tower seem mostly themed around Sussur blooms, this theory seems the most plausible sinceher Bulette still seems loyal to protecting Lenore’s favorite places, and it seems unlikely it would devour its friend.It will be exciting to see if Lenore DeHurst crops back up in future Larian projects, referencing her vanishing inBaldur’s Gate 3.
