In a red carpet interview for his showIndustry, Harington explains thathe does not think he will “ever watch"House of the Dragonand he likely will not “watch Game of Thrones again for very many years.” As for his reasoning, the actor feels that he has “spent too long there,” referring to the amount of time that he has dedicated to theGame of Thronesuniverse. I think for me it’s just I’ve spent too long there. And I wish them all the best and I hear it’s wonderful and going really well. But I don’t think I’ll ever watch [House of the Dragon], and I don’t think I’ll watch Game of Thrones again for very many years.
This Is A Change From Harington’s Previous Reactions To House Of The Dragon
Harington Once Reported Liking The Show
Harington’s statement comes as somewhat of a surprise based on his previous statements onHouse of the Dragon. When the series first released in 2022,Harington said he was watchingHouse of the Dragonand “really enjoying it.” This comment came in September 2022, whenHouse of the Dragonseason 1 had aired less than half of its episodes. Harrington either stopped watching the show or was likely just being supportive of the spinoff.
Harington’s statement about needing separation from theGame of Thronesuniverse also seems odd because of the reportedJon Snow sequel series. Though the show has since been cancelled, it was not until April of this year that its development was nixed. With Harington originally expected to return for the Jon Snow-basedGame of Thronesspinoff,Harington’s seeming need for separation from theGame of Thronesfranchise must be somewhat recent.
Over the coming years, Harington is going to have to work even harder to resist the pull ofGame of Thronescontent. In addition toHouse of the Dragon, a spinoff series titledA Knight of the Seven Kingdoms: The Hedge Knightis also in development, and expected to release sometime next year. After that will comeHouse of the Dragonseason 3and otherGame of Thronesspinoffs, further expanding the Westeros lore beyond what already exists.
