How Will Wicked Stand Up To The Stage Musical?
WickedHas Big Shoes To Fill.
Like theotherWickedtrailers, this latest look at themusical heavily emphasizes the song “Defying Gravity.“The pop music take on the Broadway song is particularly evident, adding a highly-produced quality to Erivo’s outstanding vocals. “Defying Gravity” is the most memorable song from theWickedstage musical, so it makes sense why the movie would want to greatly emphasize its significance.
I’m Relieved The Wicked Movie Has Overcome 1 Pitfall That Would’ve Ruined The Musical Adaptation
The Wicked movie could have taken the easy route with its adaptation of the musical, but has thankfully avoided one of the worst possibilities.
The stage musical versionwas lauded for its overall production quality, having particularly notable scenic design, for which it was nominated for a Tony. Thetrailer shows that the film version puts in great effort to replicate the set design to the best of its ability. Showing Elphaba’s adventure to Oz, the previewselaborate on the gravitas of the expansive journey thattheWickedcharactersgo on in the fantastical world. The yellow brick road looks beautifully bright against the highly saturated colors of the scenery.

Hopefully, these factors will make it such thatWickedcan live up to the high expectations of the stage musical. It was nominated for ten Tony awards following its release, winning three. The leading performances of Idina Menzel and Kristin Chenoweth are often regarded as some of the best of 21st-century Broadway, putting particular pressure on leads Grande and Menzel. However, thisWickedtrailer is a promising sign that the upcoming film may be up to the task, with the synergy already evident.
